Other than perhaps, Cowles Mountain, Iron Mountain, and "Potato Chip Rock" (Mount Woodsen), no other mountain hiking destination receives as much discussion and hype as El Cajon Mountain (El Capitan). Long touted as San Diego's hardest hike for its distance (twelve miles roundtrip), its elevation gain (over 4,000 feet), and the hot hot heat of eastern San Diego, ECM is a challenging hike. Whether it - or other contenders like Otay Mountain, or Villager Peak are the "hardest" hikes is a subjective debate. Having said that, it is a hike full of challenges, for which hikers should be prepared for and have plenty of water; and one that like many other east county peaks, has a rich mining history. For those looking for an adventure during the right time of year, ECM does not disappoint.
