Loved this video. I was born & raised in El Monte. Went to Cortada Elementary, Portrero Middle and El Monte High. I moved out of California in June of 1990. I was 18. Haven't been back since but have wonderful memories of The Tasty Freeze across from EMHS, Tito's sandwiches, Fletcher Park, the swap meet on Chico, the Starlite drive-in, crossing Santa Anita & Mildred when the 1987 Whittier earthquake hit and my first fist fight on the corner of Garvey & Central in 1986.

It’s crazy how years later I’ve relived this, went to Cortada , Potrero and El Monte and went to all the spots you mentions, Tito’s is still going strong, Chico swap meet no longer came back after covid. And dang I remember one time my friend got in a fight in Garvey and central by the Jim’s. This was like in 2008

Thank you for posting this wonderful video. My family emigrated from Ecuador to Los Angeles, CA in 1956. Our aunt sponsored us, she was married to a sales manager at Felix Chevrolet Downtown LA and they had properties in El Monte on Burkett Ave, including a small egg ranch. My parents bought a house on Bunker Ave, near Klingerman. I attended 1st grade at B.F. Maxon elementary. I was 6 yrs old and spoke no English...bilingual education in 1956 was total imersion. At 6 yrs old you are a sponge and we were fluent in English within a short time. I graduated from El Monte High School, Class of 1967. Go Lions!

Interesting to see El Monte today. I was born and raised in So. EL MONTE, attended Potrero Elementary School K thru 8th grade and then Rosemead High School. So. El Monte H.S. did not exist. I remember Gay Lion Farm , which later became Starlight Drive in theater. I lived by Rosemead Blvd and Rush Ave. And saw Legg Lake being developed. We used to catch Crawdads at Marano Beach. We used to rock out at El Monte Legion Stadium. Good Memories indeed!

This is a great documentation of what El Monte looks like at the present time. There are so many changes going on here, and it's good to see someone actually took the time to record El Monte in its present state. I am 54 years old and born and raised here, and have gotten to see the many changes that have been implemented to the city over the years. It will be great to someday look back to how our city looked in 2021with actual video footage. The written history of the city could have mentioned how the area already dubbed El Monte ( Meaning "The Meadow" by the definition of the day.) by Spanish Soldiers' and Missionaries who had stopped there in the 1870s. It was Captain Johnson of Lexington, Kentucky, in the 1880s who first wanted to name the township "Little Lexington" to honor his heritage, and through advertisements he had placed in newspapers back in Kentucky, described Little Lexington as a "white" settlement in an attempt to draw his peers to this place. (As there was racial tension even in those days.) Our city has a rich history, and I understand that every detail can't be known or covered in such a small presentation, and long story short, it's a great job done. Maybe next time, shoot it in 4k.
