In general, cable TV "news" is best avoided. It focuses on negative stories and glosses over the positives (which can far outweigh the negatives). It isn't always "fake," but it is biased. Plus, people get one idea of a place in their mind, and it stays there. This is especially for people who have never really traveled. I lived in former Soviet countries between 2001 - 2012, and here in the US people would ask me what it was like to live in a communist country. I was like (at that time) "It hasn't been communist for well over a decade!" If I had listened to the news and to other people, I would have never left my home. I think it's the same for El Salvador and other Central American countries. People have an outdated view of what life is like *now*, and they focus on how things may have been years ago. Travel is a powerful antidote. Videos like this, I hope, will stop people from being so scared of the world around them.

The whole dangerous and violent period is approximately 25 years old. The 80’s saw a 12 years civil war funded by Reagan on one side and the USSR on the other, that created mass migration then the importation of gangs, which did not exist. That is being eradicated right now with Bukele. Since colonial times El Salvador was already unique, rowdy, it was the epicenter of the independence of Central America, it opposed annexation to the Mexican Empire, the only Province of Central America to do so. So, historically in the region it has been a leader. So small, but so rowdy. It is only 21,000 k2. With 170 volcanoes, 20 of them active, in such a small area. Rivers, waterfalls, mangroves, rocky beaches, long black sand beaches, hills, valleys. So, yes, the tiny country is beautiful, with arguably the best gastronomy of Central America, and maybe also the warmest most generous people. You and I are lucky to witness this beautiful country’s rebirth and renaissance.

To anyone wanting to visit: - You can also rent a car, the majority of the roads are in great conditions, you have more control of your own schedule, you can visit more as opposed to taking a bus. - You can rent an airbnb, apartments in San Salvador or Santa Tecla are cheap, very modern with amazing views, you can also rent houses if you don't want an apartment. - The country has 3 seasons at the same time, when you land, since it's at sea level, the surrounding area can be very very hot, also the city of San Miguel is known to be very hot and other parts as well. As you leave the airport and head to San Salvador and the surrounding areas, you're climbing to an altitude of around 2,100 feet, it tends to be much cooler, but it can also get somewhat hot, not as hot as the area of the airport. If you head to El Pital, La Palma, San Ignacio (in Chalatenango) it can get very cold up there, and that's because it's at a higher altitude where the altitude ranges from about 3,100 to 8,000 feet. In some places the the average temperature in the surrounding areas is around 65- 70 degrees during the day and in some parts it can go down to 40 degrees and it all depends where you are, they also have airbnb's or hotels there where you can stay and enjoy the forest, the mountains with amazing views.

@laurenandseth
Жыл бұрын
It's actually one of the more expensive countries in Central America when it comes to lodging (especially at the popular beaches) and shopping/eating at international brands or the malls. This is largely because it uses the US dollar. However, you can save a lot and it's pretty inexpensive if you want to shop at the markets, buy locally, eat pupusas, and take the bus. There are plenty of ways to see the country very cheap! We made a video showing what all we could buy with $8 in the markets if you want to check that out for an idea. Cheers amigo!

Yall are brave ! We plan to take 4-5 years to slow travel from Mexico to Argentina, but I am still a little nervous about the safety. But you do have us thinking about it. Guessing prices are similar to Guatemala or Nicaragua ? Thx !
@laurenandseth
Жыл бұрын
That sounds amazing! The safety situation is currently getting better, so hopefully that trend continues. The prices are quite a bit more expensive actually than Guatemala and Nicaragua. Closer to Costa Rica prices. Luckily the food is very cheap though if you don't eat at international franchises. Cheap accommodation can be tricky but possible. I think having USD as the primary currency drives the prices up a bit.
