I like the idea of it being a “first Soulsborne” game, cause there are a lot of gamers who really want to get into them but are challenging to get into/get used to and they made the difficulty so strong right off the bat and it can be a turn off. It does get frustrating after a while if you’re a newbie. So having a way to ease into the play style that, as Luke said, doesn’t take away from the experience is awesome! I think having this option available for those who want to ease into it is amazing and a great choice on the dev team’s part.
@steohara6353
2 жыл бұрын
I find what turns them off more is the reputation. It’s not that the games are hard for the sake of being hard because once you watch the enemies you start to pick up their patters and that’s the point, you lose you learn to succeed . Once you see the patterns they’re not overly hard
@MaybeMockingbird
2 жыл бұрын
@@steohara6353 that’s fair but if you’re also brand new and have NEVER played a game like this, the overall difficulty of it can be a turn off. It’s not like a typical RPG or even Skyrim, it’s a different breed of game and you have to learn an entirely new play style to really grasp them. Take all of that and then add in the reputation it has it can be a massive turn off. I HATED playing Bloodborne, and I game frequently in many different genres on many different platforms and have for over two and a half decades. It wasn’t even the reputation of it that was the turn off, it was the play style and steep learning curve, and if an avid gamer like me doesn’t feel like it’s approachable I know a lot of newer/casual gamers won’t enjoy them either. It’s about accessibility and enjoyment of a broader audience to allow that broader scope of people to enjoy the franchise as a whole. Elden Ring seems to be a nice way to ease into it for those who really do want to get into it, which will open the doors for others to get into Dark Souls or Sekiro. It’s a great first step.

Heck, even just "there's a map available" is a huge boon for me. Mental mapping I can't really say is my strong suit, so a map is really nice, and you do have to actually put in at least a little effort to find the pieces via exploration to fill it out, so the world is still largely a mystery until you've been there. And it's not like the map shows you were all the caves are and such. But when you need to backtrack for any reason, being able to pull up a map and be able to go "where am I, and where do I want to go" and plan out your route just sounds so much better than having to try to remember where every point of interest was and having to recall large chunks of the world to work out how everything connected where to get where you want to go. I'd even settle for only fast traveling at points of grace.

This ended up being pretty accurate. Elden Ring wasnt the first FromSoft game I ever attempted but it was the first one I ever kept playing and finished. I briefly played the original Demon's Souls back in the day but it felt like that game punished failure & misteps far too much even before you really had a chance to get a handle on the gameplay (I still think so, although the remake seems a little more manageable). Never got very far and didnt rly enjoy any of it, and because of my experience with that I never really gave the Dark Souls series a chance bc I expected it to be more of the same. I did try Bloodborne bc it was a big PS exclusive that a lot of ppl were talking about and I liked the aesthetic quite a bit. I started it and almost immediately started thinking that FromSoftware game design is just not for me. Right at the start of the game the main street is packed with basic enemies and of course everything is extremely lethal, so the only safe path is to slowly kite them in small groups which needs to redone anytime you die, but then also around every corner is a much larger enemy type that can essentially two-shot you. So you move onward and a few minutes later can easily stumble into the first boss encounter where you are absurdly outclassed if you're not already very familiar with FromSoft gameplay. After being effortlessly wrecked by the Cleric Beast a few times I just never loaded the game back up again. I also tried Dark Souls 2 at one point bc there was just so much hype around the series and it was on sale. I started it and it was just so fucking weird, talking to birds you can't see in giant bird's nests, then I kept dying while attempting really janky platforming, so that was another one I put down and never got the urge to pick back up. I never even bought Sekiro or got into the hype around it bc I was just done with FromSoftware at that point. But Elden Ring feels like a culmination of all their previous efforts with a clear attempt to make the game more accessible than their other games. The nature of an open world map means there are far fewer roadblocks preventing progress and you get a lot more time to run around, level up, make your character stronger as you learn the mechanics. It looked so interesting that I definitely bought into the prerelease hype. I got it about a week after it came out (once I was finished with Horizon Forbidden West) and have been playing it ever since, including finishing the game once with nearly 100% completion of optional content. This also made FromSoftware design click for me a bit more. Although I still think that in Elden Ring & other games they pile on the difficulty a bit too much in certain areas, I found that if you're able to learn the gameplay, play smart, and use the tools you're given to your advantage there are usually ways to make difficult content much less frustrating. I never had to spend hours & hours replaying the same boss fight like I feared going in (like so many stubborn streamers who refused to ever do anything except spam jumping R2s). Even the toughest challenges in the game can be made manageable if you play smart and learn from your mistakes. I was quite pleased that Malenia only took a few attempts bc I was able to consistently avoid Waterfowl Dance. Malekith gave me some trouble, taking me from 100 to 0 with a combo as soon as phase 2 began a couple times, but I got him in a couple more tries. Placidusax also one-shotted me from ~1800 health by hitting me from behind with his disppearing flying lightning claws but I got him the next try. I expected Radagon & the Elden Beast to give me trouble but got through that one fairly painlessly. So I beat Elden Ring and beat every boss (all 9 Night's Cavalry & all the other nonsense, Death Rite Birds, dragons, everything) as my first full FromSoftware game.

That being said, I'm gonna follow my tradition of never using a shield, not because I don't like them, but because I forget to use them. Gonna get that power-stance-and-dodge-roll game on point!

Great video, all these things sound very promising and the game definitely sounds more approachable then other souls games. But for me, the one thing that will get me on board is the game having proper, comprehensive, accessibility features. Due to my own disabilities and neuro-divergences, I can not acces these types of games without accessibility features. It's like I know exactly what to do and how to do it but, because my brain communicates with my hands with a noticeable lag, I physically cannot. If there was a option to slow the game speed down just a bit, maybe I could play them. And it wouldn't be making the game easier, it would just be brining it down to a level where my experience was the same as everyone else's. That's why easy mode and accessibility features are so important to me, because I want to play hard games but I also want to be physically able to get through them. I can't "get good" my way through being neuro- divergent. (Thank you to the person who replied to let me know that I spelt the word neuro-divergent wrong)

I hope it’s true that most builds are viable from the early game. DS3 disappointed me in how far into the game you had to get to do a lightning Paladin. DS2 was my personal favorite to replay, just for the sheer variety of builds, both for PvE and PvP.

If you havent played a fromsoft game before but are on the fence about Elden Ring, know this: it's not really the difficulty that is the meat of this experience. It's that it's the ultimate medieval high fantasy action rpg. Not cutscene driven, the story is almost optional, there for the picking but if you dont care for it you might miss it. Does that sound like your kind of game? There's your answer. There will be people that enjoy really hard and difficult games but won't like elden ring because they just dont enjoy its nature as stated above. And there will be people that dont want a difficult experience but will still enjoy Elden Ring. People talk so much about the difficulty, but the difficulty is a side product of the experience, really. It's not the reason you should buy or avoid the game.

On the other hand, Miyazaki is 5 for 5 on delivering brilliant games, and he's not tremendously stepping outside of his comfort zone here (it's still plenty of what we know he's good at). It would be more surprising for it not to be great than the other way around.

@@bauul. Agreed. FromSoftware, and Miyazaki especially, does not miss with their games. It certainly won't be a bug-filled mess like so many big AAA games have been lately. I think the most people will complain about is the graphics, but that's because they expect it to look like Demon's Souls. Graphics isn't where they shine. It's the art direction and the feel and the gameplay. Graphics are the be all, end all of games and I wish more people would realize that.

I think itll be split. There are hundreds of thousands, millions even, of people who love every game in the soulsborne franchise and have seen enough of Elden Ring to know they will love them, it is everything they ever wanted. Then on the other end of the spectrum there are those that absolutely despise these games. They just can not get into them, they would rather just play generic AAA titles and nintendo games. And they can't stand the hype around Elden Ring. They will claim Elden Ring is a flop at every turn. Of course, most people don't fall into either of these extreme groups. They might not have played any of the soulsborne games or sekiro, they might try Elden Ring. Maybe they'll like it, maybe it won't quite be for them. But know this: it's not really the difficulty that is the meat of this experience. It's just it's the ultimate medieval high fantasy action rpg. @@are3287 I do imagine that new players having to dig for the story/lore for themselves through random NPCs they may or may not find and little notes that can also be overlooked will discourage them. As you say, it's not cutscene driven; the story isn't being spoon-fed to them as they play. I'm excited to see what Elden Ring has in store for us and I like that it still has the high difficulty but just with the option now to more readily nope away from an area and explore somewhere else for a bit. The other titles don't really allow for that; there are only so many places a player can go explore before needing to return to whatever wall they hit in order to keep trying. Being able to take a proper breather from a boss while still exploring the world and making some progress seems like it should be appealing to a lot of players.

Good To see Boss Fights are still going to be hella hard. One thing i dont hear being talked about is the fact that all souls games have had a Summons for Help Mechanic or what ever you want to call it. When I was having difficulty with a Boss in DS games I would offer my services into the Summons Que for that boss. Fighting along side someone or even a few players for a Boss you can get a better idea of what it takes and what works to Defeat them. Then you can go back into your Boss instance much better prepared for the Challenge or you can Summons your own help if you choose. A major part of my time spent in DS games was After I had completed the game once or even twice, was just making myself available in the Summons Que for a Boss Fight. Players are so excited to have beaten a particular Boss it rubs off and becomes very rewarding to help out in that way. Your pitch was excellent. The Couch Format was very acceptable. Cheers.

The thing about tutorials is that even in Sekiro they didn't tell you everything. They just explain the basics and you figure out the rest. I think that's how it will be for Elden Ring as well. And it's not just FromSoftware games but many other games that do this, many other games also does this. And that's great because figuring something out that the game doesn't tell you or at the very least has subtle hints, this makes for a very rewarding experience. I love games that reward you for paying attention and experimenting and this is one of the many reasons why I love about From Software games.

Arguably the changes that make Elden Ring seem easier are in fact just Quality Of Life improvements, but that still can be important and good for Souls and for FromSoft's design-philosophy. They should never make those games easier just for sake of a wider audiencr or appealing to people who aren't willing to give a damn about being better players, but instead make it less frustrating to play so the people who are willing to invest time and effort aren't feeling like it's wasted on BS.

Bloodborne was the one that clicked for me. I'd tried Dark Souls, Dark Souls 3, and Sekiro and I kept getting stuck on all of them. I started Bloodborne back in 2020 after Luke's streams, and the more aggressive and faster enemies really made it for me. I love it, even if I am stuck on Ebrietas, lol. Because of that game though, I'm making slow progress in Dark Souls 3 and Ellen's streams help with that as well. I'm a very visual learner, so when I'm stuck some place it helps if I can look at a video to see what I'm doing wrong. You will get to a point if you just stick with it and give it a real chance and beleive in yourself where you can literally never take damage or very minimal because youve mastered the combat and the way the controls are set-up on controller really make it a smooth muscle memory experience. I can't begin to tell you how good the control layout is on controller. Its just makes perfect sense and lines up perfectly with logic and is so buttery smooth. You gotta learn how i frames work in your dodges and posture system works with staggers etc. Once it all starts to come together for you it will all click and you will become a FS junkie. @@SorowFame I'm not too worried about that. I think the assorted dungeons with their own bosses are going to be the expected challenge we're used to. We've seen from the network test and other released footage that common enemies and bosses are going to be tough. I don't get a sense of it being very generic. Given what Aoife over at Eurogamer had to say about Elden Ring, I'm not too worried. One telling feature might be what happens if players make a beeline to the first mandatory boss. We don't know what level players might be expected to be at for that boss, and if players are getting absolutely wrecked repeatedly because they haven't explored enough to get runes and better weapons and such, then that'll show that exploration is expected and that the game isn't making bosses easier just because it's an open-world game. There won't be that level scaling stuff going on (which I don't mind if it's done right) I'm trying to go into the game without comparing it to their previous titles, for the sake of lore and gameplay. It's like players going into Bloodborne and trying to use their Dark Souls experience and needing to get the crap kicked out of them to understand that they can't really play Bloodborne like they play Dark Souls.
