Okay as I stated at the start, I haven't explored all the areas to the point where I know every secret path... However it turns out I missed like half of Raya Lucaria. I feel like you should also take into account that the Iron Virgin at the bottom of the water wheel will warp you to a special area if you die to its grab move. I know that it's technically Volcano Manor but since you can only access that little section from the Academy you could count it towards the Academy dungeon's total area, and is an extremely cool special secret area that I'd say outclasses the secret bottom of Stormveil for example

Off-topic, I actually quite like the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds despite it crippling me, just because it feels like an actually realised version of The Depths albeit with even worse enemy placement. For instance, on my fourth playthrough of the game, I accidentally jumped onto a rooftop from the beginning of the area, then decided to keep running along them. Someone else has probably pointed it out the reason there aren't any battlemages in the academy of raya lucaria is because when the academy went under lockdown after the shattering. They decided to leave in search of knowledge instead of staying inside. It's more complicated than that but that's what I remember from the battlemage armor description

My favorite area is probably either the Academy of Raya Lucaria (specifically at night) or Crumbling Farum Azula. Both give off a feeling of a grand area to explore. The Academy is probably slightly higher than Farum Azula, just because it reminds me of Bloodborne.

I don't get the hate for Lake of Rot, honestly. Sure, it's not very pleasant to traverse, but it is heaps more enjoyable than Farron Keep imo. You're not forced into a crawling pace, there aren't many enemies there (and the only challenging one is a miniboss) and it is very simple structurally, making it pretty much impossible to get lost. In my books, Lake of Rot is one of the better poison swamps in all of From's games.

The worst part of the Lake of Rot is I'm pretty sure the scarlet rot there is just super charged. I've gotten rot while in Caelid and other areas and it doesn't chunk away at your health the rate it does in that area
@vogunBurgundy

Lake of Rot's rot is just built different. Very clearly meant to be the main focus of the area there. If you aren't able to get from one platform to the next I'd recommend equipping all your best Immunity Armor, it should be enough to put you over the cap if you just wait for the resist to tick down between runs. The Mushroom armor from Seethewater Cave is legit useful for that purpose (on top of being funny)- failing that there's the Fur Sets from the Siofra River, as well as an Immunity-boosting Antler Talisman somewhere in that zone IIRC.

I'd say I generally agree with this list, although I don't really think there were any areas I disliked. I think there's a few other smaller dungeons that are unique enough to warrant mention. Caria Manor, Morne Castle, Castle Sol, Redmane Castle, Shaded Castle, Carian Study Hall, and Ruin Strewn Precipice all come to mind. After making this list I'm realizing how many castles there are in this game lol
@MarkHogan994
2 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree, those definitely warrant a mention. I mean maybe not the Study Hall, because there's not much to it, and Redmane Castle is honestly kind of empty and boring, but the other 5 you mentioned are very well designed and decently large levels. They all felt like classic From Soft areas to me.
@Arcturys

@@MarkHogan994 Study Hall was short but honestly it felt very souls-like to me. Reminiscent of the grand archives. Also the mechanic of flipping it was very cool. Also, have you gone through Redmane Castle before the festival is triggered? It's a fully fledged dungeon on par with some of the others in complexity. Not the most unique, but complex enough that it warrants mention IMO.

The first time I went through Leyndell, I didn't even realize it was a legacy dungeon. I thought it was one of those more open areas like Siofra river that I was just freely exploring, until at some point I realized that the level design had organically guided me through the intended path without me even knowing. Hermit Village is one of my favorite dungeons. I love the volcanic scenery and the secret areas were done so well. Also it's interesting how character build can effect how much you enjoy dungeons. I used a Moonveil spellsword build, so I was able to adapt to pretty much everything. Lake of Rot is still boring, though... Too much sitting around and waiting for the rot to go away so that I don't run out of boluses.

Great video, enjoyed your list and commentary. Right out the gate, Volcano Manor is probably in my top 3. It reminds me so much of Bloodborne and my first go round through that area was at times kinda scary. The only entry on your list I have to kind of disagree with is Deeproot Depths. To me it was kinda like a throwback and homage to DS2, and as a fan of DS2, I thought that was very cool. I also share your opinion about Mohgwyn Palace, especially with all that you said about those disturbing birds (my thoughts exactly), however I’m surprised you didn’t mention anything about the farming potential in that area. But yeah, great video +1 sub

You can skip almost all of Elphael and ESPECIALLY the Pond of Rot by falling down the elevator shaft just right, your dead body will press the button and bring it up so you can run back and then take it all the way down to Malenia's grace in one fell swoop. Not something I'd do on my first playthrough but it's been nice on subsequent runs to just get to the fight ASAP.

I agree with the Volcano Manor. I didn't know that it was a place that would open up to you after you finish the questline. Just hearing a character say "There are some strange voices coming from the next room in the night" and then just looking if there is something to find in the night just to realise it's an hour long dungeon was a really cool experience. It's just sad that it ruined the questline for me so I have to experience that one in a different way in NG+, but I wanted to reach the manor without being teleported this time around anyway.

I agree with almost everything you say. However, the rot swamp didn't bug me that much. I thought it was fine. Personally, I think they should tone down their gross area/mobs/bosses a bit to focus more on the godly/breath taking/eerie environments they create. That's where they shine above everyone else. I get that the gross stuff is part of FromSoft games, but I don't think that they are memorable in a good way. However, things like Leyndel, OMG, give me more. I want more of that, and Siofra river and the starting area and so forth. Those are pick content. My most hated area (Sewers) is actually IN my favourite area. Which takes away just a little of the enjoyment of the city for me. I was looking forward to a really good maze in the game. And the layout of the Sewers gives you that. However, the aesthetic of it and the mobs there make me just not want to explore it. I really can't be bothered going around in it trying to figure it out because almost everything there annoys me. Which is a shame, because as I said. I was looking forward a good tight maze area like that. Luckly the game have other amazing areas that filled that gap in a different way.

@anonymousnate678

Funny thing about the runback for Dragonlord is that they didn't put a stake of Marika there purely for lore reasons as Marika never had any influence in Farum Azula. Same thing with Rennala's runback, Rennala most likely would have had all Stakes removed out of grief after Radagon left her to wed Marika. One of those cases of causing a bit of player suffering just to reinforce points in the lore which is actually pretty cool if you ask me.

I really don’t think it’s fair to mark down an area for “reused enemies” they’re only reused from the perspective of a first playthrough, because we don’t even know if the enemies were “reused” for these areas or if the earlier appearances were added to the game later than them. Areas should be rated off their own merits
@Stuugie.
2 жыл бұрын
I disagree, I think it doesn't matter where in the design process the enemies were added, what matters is the end product. If there's legitimate lore reasons for reusing enemies I'm all for it, but if they're reused for padding I don't like it. Siofra river pt 2 feels like padding, while albanaurics in volcano manor feel like lore
