@rayquaza1245
2 жыл бұрын
The problem with the lifesteal is not the mechanic itself, but when it's combined with her being absurdly fast, aggressive, and unblockable. Also her waterfowl dance and phantom spirits being nearly impossible to dodge CONSISTENTLY for most players will refill her health bar. I agree that making the waterfowl dance more punishable would help a lot. Any super long combo that does high damage should always end with a big punish opportunity to reward dodging it, like Midir's beam attack. I think they should keep the lifesteal but reduce how much health she gets from it, and make blocking reduce it even further. Or maybe make it so once you get her down to certain health levels, she can't lifesteal past that level (ex: once you get her down to 50% her lifesteal won't heal her above 50%).
@tinminator8905
2 жыл бұрын
Her phantom ability is very consistent. The thing people get hit by is the second to last phantom which comes directly after the one before it, because the sweeping motion of that masks the fast phantom. It can get you roll caught if you get hit by that if the game buffered your roll. The way to dodge the attack is by dodging in a same-ish slower rythym for each of the first few. After you dodge the one who does a sweeping strike to the left you immediately roll instead of keeping your rythym then going back to that rythym for the last phantom and her stab.

The phantom attack is pretty consistent to dodge if you know the pattern. STR users animations are actually so slow that she can recover from the hit, attack again, and reliably hit you, all while youre recovering from your attack animation. Ive seen an insane amount of people say that this fight made them re-spec into a dex bleed build. That is more of a problem with all endgame bosses being unrealistically agressive and have so short of downtime you legit cannot punish 99% of their moveset. Elden Ring is fun AF but falls apart endgame.
@melonmazing515

My problem is that Malenia specifically railroads you into one specific type of build: Bloodhound's Step Bleed/Frost DEX spamming. Elden Ring in particular has some really egregious use of status effects and weapon arts to win fights and coming from the older games I feel like it really cheapens the experience. My friend who started Elden Ring is really proud that he killed her and I didn't think twice about it, as I hadn't seen her fight yet. And then he told me he just pushed her into a corner and used the mimic to stunlock and bleed her to death. Kinda no surprise to me that he struggled to kill Maliketh when I did it almost on the first try.

I didn't use RoB. Hell, my main profile uses a cold broadsword. And yes, it's a str focus. Though, to be fair, I have two big things that helped with the fight. First: COLD broadsword. Apparently she's exceptionally weak to frostbite. Then there's the ash of war on my shield: shield crash. Her poise is so low(normally) that I can actually knock her flat on her back with the ash, and then I get a free use of Carian Grandeur. Granted, because I'm a melee build, I don't have a lot of FP, so I can only do this about two times from full bar, and I only have 2 fp pots. Made me have to use the abilities sparingly.

@@mutilator97 "just don't get hit" argument is old, move on. NK wouldn't 1-shot with his spear if you build your character around high HP, in ER a lot of bosses deal stupid amounts of damage even at high HP values, and can outright 1-shot you if you're below a threshold.
@mutilator97

@@purpleglitch2524 First off, I understand being able to get hit. It's fine to mis-time an input every once in a while against some attacks. But when you get hit by an attack that has an obvious and long wind-up, you have to expect it to do serious damage. And having played through the game multiple times on different vigor levels, you'll be fine so long as you are at at least 40 vigor by the time you hit Farum Azuula. Hell, my mage build is still sitting at 45 vigor on playthrough 2, and doing just fine(also light rolling, so it's not armor). Unless of course by "one-shot" you mean getting hit by all the hitboxes in a chain, in which case sure. You'll die. But at least bosses generally don't have true combos in Elden Ring, unlike DS3. Oh, and having recently played through DS3, don't bullshit me about "stupid amounts of damage" when my high hp build was losing a third of his hp on hit against pretty much every boss in the game. That's really not far off of relativistic damages from end-game Elden Ring, so long as you didn't run the 0-vigor "meta" build and actually invested appropriate values. I wanted to like Malenia, but I just don't. Good looking boss, great arena, good music, and most of the moves are good. But however, a hard fight is good but a tedious one is not. I beat her a number of times, but I have no desire to fight her again unless she is nerfed or some aspects of the fight are fixed. The life steal is not good, but what's worse is that there's no counter or mitigation tool for it. An unprecedented choice on Fromsoftware's part. Bosses and enemies healing is nothing new, but there was always a way to counter it. With Malenia, you can't block it, you can't use antihealing tools, there's no hidden tricks. And no, dodging Malenia's attacks are not a counter because that's what you're supposed to do anyway in all enemy encounters. The fix for this would be to have 100% physical damage shields negate the healing and/or have the Albanuric Pot disable her life steal for the duration of its effect. The Albanuric Pot would also need to be buffed to disable all healing sources in order for it to work anyway. This change alone would make Malenia a tolerable fight for me. Most players complain about Waterfowl dance. I learned how to dodge this move over time but due to the suddenness of the move, it makes fighting her melee anxiety inducing for me because I'm uncertain of when she's going to try to cut me to pieces. Waterfowl Dance is dangerous, but when it happens right on top of you is almost certain death even if you are competent at dodging the move. The fix for this would be have Malenia only use it when you're at a medium-ish distance, increase the wind up and not chain it with other moves. The clones. The goddamn clones. Easily the most problematic move for me because some clones occasionally land offscreen and thrust you when you're in the midst of avoiding others. There's nothing really wrong with move itself, it's a camera issue and the clones should stay onscreen. One final thing, is that her Great Rune is garbage. It should replicate her life steal, not Bloodborne's Rally mechanic. A larger problem is that you don't keep Great Runes when you start NG+ and since Malenia is so late in the game it's hard to justify using her crappy rune.

Of all the bosses, Malenia was the only one that cornered me into very few specific builds. When I fight a boss for the first time, I'm ready to meet the fight on the developer's terms, asking the question: "What does the game wants me to do here?" and after I succeed I try different ways and get creative. Malenia however is the only boss in the entire Souls series that I can't _figure out._ My only reasonable conclusion is that whoever has designed this wants me to have a long, grueling, _'hit once and then run away'_ kinda fight which is more like a challenge-run fight than a normal one. After fighting Malenia I've been thinking of a way to fix her healing ability, and honestly they need to do one thing. Make it so that there is a key item or consumable or something that cancels out her healing ability. Here are some examples. DS2: Mytha, the Baneful Queen You can burn a water wheel that causes Mytha's arena to not be covered in a pool of poison, in which allows her to heal herself. BB: Vicar Amelia You can temporarily cancel Vicar Amelia's ability to heal by throwing an item at her called Numbing Mist, which also cancels healing from players. These 2 share similar nerfs to healing but different ideas as to how they are stopped. Malenia, a boss that can not only attack in quick succession but can heal in doing so should have been given something so that her healing ability can be stopped, temporarily or permanently.

I can accept the lifedrain, but I can't accept that she lifedrains you on block. I remember walking in with my trusty shield and spear, going back and forth with her. Saw the lifedrain and was like "ok I better not get hit damn" and then I saw the lifedrain happen while blocking. Even when I'm taking zero damage, she still is somehow draining health from nothing. At that point point she may as well smack the floor the get health. I still believe it's a bug that fromdrones gave them a free pass on, so they don't have to fix it. That platforming in that giant tree leading up to Malenia was amazing. That's easily been my favorite part of the game and I've missed that exact type of level design pretty much the whole game leading up to it. I loved it when Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 made you walk super narrow risky paths. It's exciting. I only died once during that giant tree part and it wasn't even from falling. I mean you already had Rivers of Blood and an Uchigatana. I was rocking Rivers of blood and Meteoric Blade +10s. You just have to take the right paths at the right time so that you aren't bombarded by those light bubble guys. Even the big ones are push overs as long as you dodge their first melee and start ripping into them..

I disagree, malenia is fundamentally broken. In addition to being the pinnacle of aggression, non-stop combos, combo chaining and lack of openings that plague this game's bosses and the pinnacle of overturning that's so prevalent in the endgame, she has 5 mechanics that are completely unique to her in the whole game. 1. The lifesteal that you mentioned, which works on blocked hits and in most cases is just overkill, losing almost all your hp in a small combo is punishment enough. 2. Not one but two combos that can stun lock you and have timings that ensure that if you dodge one part you'll be hit by another, essentially working as a one shot. 3. She can deflect attacks sekiro style. Not only does she have minimal openings, she can straight up deny you dealing damage to her in neutral. 4. She can cancel her stagger animation, usually into an absurd hyperarmor kick that's literally unavoidable if you relied on her staggering. 5. Absurdly inconsistent hyperarmor which begins from the first frame of her attacks and persists through their entirety. Every other entity in the game has hyperarmor only in specific frames of their attacks, malenia just throws that out the window. All of these work to turn an already challenging boss into an extreme difficulty spike. The options for beating her are relying on luck to minimize her bs, abusing the most powerful tools in the game to again avoid her bs or playing extremely passively to yet again avoid dealing with her bs. The key to beating her is avoiding to engage with the vast majority of her kit, and that's the exact opposite of what a well made boss is. I know, sure beating her is a huge dopamine hit and all that, but I personally find fighting her extremely boring once I admitted the fact that I'll die a lot every time I fight her.
@thedoomslayer5863
2 жыл бұрын
This is why I found sekiro their best game and hands down best combat. You can have bosses with all that bullshit there and because of the posture and deflect system IT WORKS. Imagine Malenia in sekiro. You deflect the ENTIRE waterfowl dance for MASSIVE posture damage letting you fill her posture up and one shot her bypassing the healing. It just speaks wonders to sekiro that even bosses widely disliked like Malenia would work there

@@thedoomslayer5863 well, different bosses for different mechanics. 7:45 legitimate skill issue. her lifesteal isn't a problem when you time your dodges properly, she can be staggered, which makes it easy to interrupt her after certain moves. Contrary to popular belief, Malenia doesn't have an absurd amount of invincible attacks. She can get interrupted after most of them, with an exception to like 3 moves in her first phase. The fight is basically a dance, which gets faster over time. When she reaches second phase, use a long range attack or aow like the Death's Poker skill, which has good range, does a ton of damage, and inflicts frostbite. Throwing ice pots at her works, but you have to hit her before invincibility frames start. Blood loss works on her, frostbite works on her and poison works on her. the first two will stagger her NO MATTER WHAT she's doing, whether it's the waterfowl dance, or part of a combo. just about all of your " Criticism's" are due to lack of skill and/or game knowledge. The best thing to do when fighting Malenia is to unironically: "Git Good".

I agree on the points you raise about Waterfowl. The punish window after some huge combo attack is usually the capstone to the "feel good" moment of dodging the whole thing succesfully. Waterfowl just says "no, fuck you". And usually there's no difficulty in dodging it if you are able to create distance; the problem is at its worst when she hyperarmors through an attack of yours with the beginning of Waterfowl and you can only sit there helplessly as your character sits in recovery frames and then you die.

About the 4:05 area, there is an alternate path literally right next to the main one where if you approach from there the ballistas dont hit you and you drop behind the tree avatar 3. Mimic Tear Ashes, one of the best ashes imo is summoned with HP not FP so anyone can summon it, it just puts you 1 flask down, I agree that fighting bosses without the is better and malenia is the only boss I used them for, I literally had to go and upgrade mimic tear from lvl 1 to 10 just for this fight 4. I agree that the dance is a bit too fast on the startup and the first hit will almost 100% hit you if you are close but the 2nd and 3rd hit only require 1 good roll, which if you spam roll hit 1, hit 2 will catch you due to the roll timings + you can totally roll in on the last afterhit to punish the move its a really easy roll 5. Although im not good enough to consistently beat hear, the legendary of let me solo her proves thats its skill not luck and also its meta knowledge on where to dogde and when Another point you didnt mention is the 3 hit slash which frustrated me a lot until I realized you need to roll intro her not away so the 3rd slash doesnt clip you. I think what truly makes the fight feel frustrating and unrewarding to “learn” is that she breaks the rules of the game that otherwise learning a boss fight helps with. You learn how many attacks it takes to stagger the boss to give yourself breathing room? Well, Malenia is allowed to immediately animation cancel a stagger. You use a heavy weapon to get poise breaks? Yah she gets hyper armor on several of her combos and if she just strings them back to back she can hyper armor well past her threshold for poise break. You committed to an attack animation and so did she but instead of following through, she gets to stop and block your attack then repunish immediately while you are still in recovery frames. These things, no matter how well you learn the fight, make it so that you are not properly rewarded in the fight for capitalizing on what you’ve learned. She takes what you learned and shoves it inti a waterfowl of death lol now yes lifesteal is a brutal mechanic and waterfowl is very very hard to dodge but I think those other issues are what actually ~break the flow of combat that other good bosses have and what makes her fight feel less rewarding compared to say Placidusax or Godfrey. It just feel really grindy souless game when imp from mountain top deal 10 time more dmg and 10 time tankier than limbgrave imp when they doesn't even look diff. Plus stop shoved every enemies to limb grave there are no unique enemies to use late area bc of it. Kaiden literally and unrequired extra in limbgrave. They could just made kaiden and skeleton bandit unique to the snow area to made it unique. For example they could just made the capital full of lyndell knight instead of lyndell Soldier and Crucible knight will be there to act as Bigger knight to lyndell knight. Or making bellbearing hunter blasphemous knight serving under rykard. Or making Watchdog, Cemetery Shade as elite enemies that place to stop you reaching the lever instead of being a boss. Remove all boss from small dungeon. For example 6 watchdog in one room, you don't have to fight them but you have to avoid their attack while running pass them, finding the lever would be more interesting with that than they just put the lever behind a hidden wall everytime with nothing beside imp in the dungeon.

@@NaK-R No If I stagger her (not via parry or bleed/frost mini stagger), I want her like other bosses to follow the rules and get staggered. Hell you even hear the audio queue for it But Malenia can shrug off this stagger if her Ai chooses the jump roundhouse kick move (which happens a lot in phase in 2). Also when she does the big straight lunge, she can reset her poise bar and cant be staggered out the animation, you can hear the audio queue for this one as well. It just reduces the viability of non meta builds for the average player. I switched to dual seppuku occ uchi's and cheesed her in 2 attempts (12 in total) cause at that point I didn't care about the fight at all, just wanted Miquella's needle and out. The Rot swamp is a short segment in Elphael and like every swamp in Souls games ever is easily crossed with step abilities... or just using the terrain more effectively. Consecrated Snowflied has only a storm at the very start of he area and if you stay on the path barely get you in combat if at all. Ordina is meant as a gate in a classcial zelda style requiring you to think to get to the haligtree, would defeat the purpose if the statues would be in a straight line. The BKA's are easily to avoid due to the footprints and don't follow you up the buildings and if it's too difficult just get the Sentry's Torch. There are literally two section that require platforming outside extreme secret areas while those two are secret areas themself. Lastly, you aren't supposed to get through the ballistas, that's why every single slope pushes you towards the other side so you be on top of this segment and skip it entirely. If you ignore all of that and bash your head against the wall because you feel this should be the way, that's your problem. And after your complaints with the "platforming", no wonder your fine motor skills are having troubles with Malenia.Just look at the footage, you jump straight into her tells and bash at her like in some drunken stupor because you "feel" you should be able to. You ignore proper spacing and wonder why you get hit, you know of her lifesteal and get greedy constantly, you can dodge every one of her slashes of her dance... and don't let me get started how you can carry more than three freezing pots, shields do work if you take the right ones or ashed ones with you, how many of her attacks are parryable and that the weapon you are using, rivers, is so insanely broken in this fight that you can almost stun lock her witht the weapon art. Is Malenia a hard fight, especially at first, absolutely... but your entire complaints base around you not adjusting to the game and demand the game to adjust to you. And countless videos on people defeating her with ease or even people like "Let Me Solo Her" show this perfectly, it's not a luck but a skill thing... so you are just salty and this suggested "fix" is just you crying for a nerf.

This is an optional boss, and meant to be an especially punishing fight. You can use mimic tear summon (requires no FP), you can summon help, and most importantly, you can skip it. There are ways to make it easier and you deliberately avoided them. The waterfowl dance is an immensely frustrating, punishing attack, and this fight would not be what it is without it. Like you say, distance is a great way to avoid it, and you're guaranteed to get it once about 1/4 her health is gone in phase 1. If you get her lower than that and she hasn't done it yet, BE CAREFUL because she might bust it out close range if you're being too aggressive with her. When she does bust it out at close range, get up close, dodge and hit forward, then dodge and hit backward to dodge the long first flurry, then dodge through her on the second and third flurries. It took me a LOT of dying to finally figure this out, but the attack can indeed be dodged consistently. The attack is meant to be punishing. A greatshield trivializes it, so the trade-off is lifesteal. It's the trade off for the whole fight. A shield makes the fight less punishing, so lifesteal forces you to learn the attacks and avoid at least some of them. A shield is another thing that makes it more doable that you deliberately avoided. You seemed to want the difficulty, but also have a problem with the difficulty you imposed on yourself.
@tinminator8905
2 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is that because the attack is so far out of balance with the rest of her moveset that she is mostly luck based on how many times she does it. I bet almost everyone who beat the boss for the first time just got a run where she waterfowled 2 times at most. I would be ok if all her moves were that hard to dodge and she would be legitimately like a challenge run but as is, it is just pure luck and everyone can easily beat her with good RNG.

About waterfall dance, there's only one thing you said that was wrong, that you can't punish it, if you dodge torward her douring the second flurry, and then stay crouched close to her, her third flurry will wiff completely, then you walk away from her a bit before her last attack and then you dodge trough her last attack torward her, then you can punish her, yes, crouching trough her third flurry works if you walk away from her after she pass above your head, and you even recover some stamina with this before trying to punish.

I feel like the 2nd and 3rd part of waterfowl are fine but the 1st part just needs to be shorter. Especially since dodging through the 2nd and 3rd part at mid weight is consistent, but the 1st part is just way too long for heavy weight class weapons to recover in time to run away. If the move gets tweaked I think she’ll be perfectly fine.

Finally beat her after probably some 60 attempts across 3 days. A few things I'd like to comment on the video: - You can use any spirit ash as long as you have Cerulean Hidden Tear in the Wondrous Physick. - There are a few spirit ashes that are actually useful. I used Redmane Knight Ogha. As long as you summon him by the entrance and he doesn't get attacked, he'll stay back and snipe with his greatbow, which will often knock Malenia down, giving you free hits. - You can have up to 10 freeze pots if you get all the Ritual Pots. Still an absolute headache, and I think she's a bit overtuned.

You’re using bleed with double katanas and rivers of blood yet you’re complaining about difficulty. That’s a you problem. Getting up to the haligtree is supposed to be difficult because idk if you realized this, but consecrated snowfield is an endgame area. Of course it’s gonna be a little challenging. And you can avoid the black knife assassin as a whole by just staying on the rooftops for the majority of it until you have to go on the ground to go up a ladder to another rooftop. The assassin only catches you if you’re going super slow. Also again, you’re using double katanas with one being rivers of blood. You can’t say you “made it harder on yourself” just cuz you don’t use ashes. You have a broken build. It’s called getting better at fighting.

There's a path that leads around that particular putrid avatar and lets you get behind the ballistas. Also, the mimic tear is a spirit ash that at max level is just strong enough to hang with Malenia, because whatever build you decide to try and beat her with, it will also have, and it only costs hp, no fp. Also, I think there's only one black knife assassin that you HAVE to fight face-to-face, so long as you find all the spots before you go into the evergaol space. The other's aren't really in the way... I say this only to then say that I agree 110% that this whole section was absolute hell and I hated most of it. One invisible assassin who can backstab grab you from the front REPEATEDLY is one too many, but even once you deal with that, there's the damn rapid-fire homing archers with arrows that do JUST AS MUCH DAMAGE. At least you can kinda counter-snipe them to at least knock them off the rooftops and then you can either go beat them to death or avoid them... But then there's Halligtree itself. Everything here is so powerful and there's a lot of terrible environmental hazards. You finally get to conclude Millicent's story while you're here and... well... let's just say it's an ending typical of the rest of the game and involves yet another fight one might find frustrating if you aren't prepared specifically for it. Then there's Malenia. I have nothing nice to say about Malenia. Even her loot kinda sucks. An incant that takes up THREE SLOTS, a sword with fairly high dex requirements that only people building toward it are likely to be able to use right away, and armor that's... not that cool aside from the helmet. I suppose it might have OK resists for its weight? It was funny. I got taken out by scarlet rot when I finally beat her after around 2.5 hours. Even when I won, I lost, lmao, but I went down about 3 seconds after she did, so the game fully registered my win and I just ran back in and grabbed my runes off the floor.

Counter point to defend the developers. Melenia doesn't fight fair and that's by design, so neither should you. In the lore, Radan tried to fight her fair, waited for her to put on her prosthetic and was winning but Melenia used the scarlet rot when she knew she couldn't win another way. The spirit ashes aren't a detriment in this fight if you level them and use them correctly and are the key to winning a challenging but fair fight. You just completely ignored them because in your head they're just a crutch. Beating these games is all about using whatever means available to overcome obstacles. Personally I did a re-spec as well just to beat her because that water foul dance IS total bs so why shouldn't I do the same if the game allows? I thought it was a pretty great fight. First time through I beat her with a summon and sorcery, which was actually relatively easy. On NG+ I went solo melee and it was really hard but everything felt very fair to me. Her lifesteal was a good mechanic for me because it rewarded me for dodging her stuff. Which feels pretty great to pull off. Everything can be dodged consistently with practice and good spacing, and you can punish a lot of her moves if you've got the right tempo for it. Patience is the name of the game. I loved figuring out how to avoid her stuff and coming out of those long chained combos without getting hit. Waterfowl Dance is really hard. But she'll only do it like 5 times in the fight and if you've got good spacing it's very easy to dodge. If she happens to start it up when you're too close, you can still dodge most of it consistently if you don't panic (still does a ton of damage though). And you can absolutely punish the end of that move, I found my jump attack was the best at that. Just gotta get the timing down right. It's a tough fight but there are a ton of options to make it easier that you pointed out. Beating her with self-imposed limitations (no summons, no ranged attacks, etc) makes her extremely hard but not impossible. I don't think she needs fixing.

The problem is she literally goes against everything the game has established before this. The others have already mentioned some, but it's also no secret that the game was optimized for summons. It can be beaten without them, but the aggression of the bosses, especially in the end game, demonstrates the reason why summons are there: taking aggro. With her, it completely defies every other boss you fight up to this point. Giving her a broken moveset and a broken ai, while also nerfing multiple abilities on your end is not making a good challenge. That's called artificial difficulty.

Except Malenia herself stands on multiple crutches: lifesteal, annoying AoEs that make punishing her vulnerable moments something you are discouraged from doing, a stupid status effect, excessively high aggression, extremely small punish windows, overtuned tracking on her attacks, the list goes on. Also, yes there are crutches you can fall on. They’re called bleed, stunlocking and bloodhound’s step. Don’t praise this boss for stuff for stuff it fails at, just like much of the other bosses. I wouldn't have had/wanted it any other way, except make malenia harder so I can enjoy the fight longer I spent about 3 hours ish fighting malenia only because I'm somewhat of a souls vet, but I loved every minute of it. I know not of the issues you speak 😌
