The bit about Superarmor is not right. What she refers to is the stagger bar, which both us and the enemies have. This was easier to understand in Sekiro where your and the enemies' stagger bar was visible in the UI. Once the stagger bar is depleted the player/boss get staggered and are open to critical hits. Superarmor on the other hand is a special kind of Poise you and enemies get when doing certain attacks (especially with huge weapons, like colossal swords, weapon arts, etc.) which makes those attacks uninterruptible with but the heaviest attacks. Poise is just something you get from wearing heavy armor (you can see it in the stats page) and bosses have a lot of it, depending on their size. Humanoids might actually have low Poise and can be interrupted in their attacks, which the only way to interrupt the attack of a huge boss is to stagger them. The more Poise you have, the harder it is for enemies to interrupt your attack animations.

21:39 I wish I heard this tip earlier - it is insane how much easier most fights get once you learn this. Even on the most difficult boss fight (we all know who I'm talking about). Particularly, it seems to be DANGEROUS to roll away from attacks in most cases, as rolling away simply makes you roll your character's hitbox across the entire range of the enemy's attack, so even if you time it perfectly and the i-frames prevent you from getting hit with the first portion of the attack, the i-frames expire at the end of the roll, right when you are at the tail end of the same attack, thus you end up being hit by it. Even in cases where a boss does a large area of effect attack that you want to be completely outside of, it's better to RUN away from it rather than roll. Conversely, rolling either into the enemy, or in the direction of the attack (i.e. rolling left if the attack is coming from the left) makes the attack pass over your i-frames quickly into an area you are no longer occupying, thus leaving you safe.

Stamina management is so vital that it's quite accurate to call it an extension of your health bar. It may not be apparent at first but once you engage enemies that easily deplete your stamina bar when you block a single attack or can withstand as many hits as you can dish out before your stamina runs out you'll be forced to think about when to stop your assault and how to balance dodging and shielding. Or...maybe I just need to level up my stamina 😅 In any case, figuring out the importance of stamina management was enlightening.
@NexusKin
Жыл бұрын
A very good strategy that I found was to use a really heavy Greatshield to block attacks, which staggers the enemy, following that up with a powerful strike to deal a whole lot of damage, then backing off to let Stamina regenerate. For those tougher enemies and bosses that can't be staggered, you can do the same thing with dodge rolling attacks, or invest points into stats that help you with ranged attacks so you can keep your distance.

For new players: there are two things that happen during challenging boss encounters- dodge and attack. You dodge when you’re told. You attack when you’re told. If you have ranged spells, use them. If you’re melee, jump heavy. If you roll when you’re told and attack when you’re allowed, you’ll beat every boss in this game easy. In boss fights you stop playing the game and it plays you. You don’t get do dictate the pace. Think of it like you’re playing rock band or ddr instead of a melee fighter. It’s not a melee fighter, it’s just disguised as one. This was my first “souls” title and it became quite easy once I realized this. Rock Band on its second hardest setting is much more of a challenge than these boss encounters.

I'm curious... wtf "tells" you when to dodge or attack? Because when I roll, I die. And when I attack, I die. Every non-repetitive MoB, and some of the repetitive ones, have anti-rolling attacks that they use, a lot. Rolling in boss battles is almost useless unless you roll until your far enough away to drink a potion. As long as you can survive the 1-2 hits you take while rolling.

My number one tip would be to not get greedy when facing a formidable monster or especially a boss fight. Don't think that just because you have the Stamina in the green bar its always safe to keep attacking. You need to often retreat to safety and either heal or let your Stamina gauge regenerate or these bosses and enemies will have you for lunch. Most creatures can kill in a few attacks as you progress through the game.

Always be on the lookout for scenes in which two enemy groups are fighting one another, since the game seems to think it is YOU killing them and you will get their runes when they die. I first noticed this when I came across some soldiers fighting goblins early in the game. Then again when a huge giant, spawned after I got onto a particular road, went after a group of soldiers. In Calead at the impossible bridge, it's possible to trigger a battle between T rex dogs and soldiers, then run up to the farther off cliff from the watch tower and simply take in runes from the battle below. Then run to the state of grace to respawn and start all over again. It's how I'm leveling up without having to do combat.

What I find to be the main combat mechanics weakness in this series is the rolling/dodging system. It is all about timing. One can literally roll through the weapon of an opponent so long as the timing is right. There should have been movement flexibility in the controls, and the direction of your dodges with respect to physical objects such as weapons should have been important about whether you get hit and how badly. This system is already really good. If you add more sophisticated evasion mechanics to it, it will be tremendous.
@greasysox

Something that took me so long to figure out and still gives me trouble is the final boss has a few attacks where jumping is a better way of dodging some floor based AOEs than rolling because there's a slight delay that makes timing the roll so much more difficult than just hopping to the side

I’m finally coming to Elden Ring having played through Bloodborne several times, playing the Demon Souls remake for about a half hour, and a few hours of Sekiro. I’ve not played any of the Dark Souls series to date. I wanted to play the game similar to how I play Bloodborne, so my first choice was a Dex build Bandit. I was about two hours in before I decided to watch some tutorial videos like this one. The first thing I realized was that backstab/criticals use R1 in this game, whereas it’s a fully charged R2 in Bloodborne. I was getting pretty frustrated always failing on my backstabs 🤷♀️. Since figuring that out, Elden Ring has gotten much more satisfying. The biggest adjustment is really in the dodging/counter striking. BB has a more fast-paced feint-sidestep, whereas ER has the dodge roll, and I’m hitting the dodge way too soon, because mobs have big slow windups. Getting used to it though. Once I got myself the Hookclaws, I feel like I have a weapon that comfortably fits my playstyle 🤞

The problem is the horrible input delay.It's the same as it was with Bloodborne. You see an opening and press the attack button. But instead of landing a hit, nothing happens. ... then, after a while, your character begins his slow attack animation, and then at the very end, you could land the attack . Except, you won't. Because you are completely locked in during all this. The game practically turns off your controls until the animation is concluded. In the meantime, the enemy will move aside or attack you.

The underlying thing the Soulsborne games do that is counter-intuitive to most other action adventure, RPG games is use death as a teaching tool like Aoife, said. It sounds simple, but when you're in the heat of combat, Gamer Brain kicks in and yells at you, "I have to beat this thing and if I don't, I'm a failure!" This might be true in the short term, but the long term benefits of dying is to teach you the enemy's move set, and even how you can adjust your playstyle as you progress. Other games treat death as a negative, but in the Soulsborne games, it's to help you be become better at the game itself in the long run.

Well, you just called me a dummie😂 all jokes aside great video, contemplating whether to purchase it or not since I heard it is extremely punishing and I haven’t really played games with combat like this, but this really broke it down, would be great if you could let me know if it’s worth the play. Great video again😀

The more you play Elden ring, the more you realise the level of genius that went into this game. One of the reasons I feel people die a lot in this game is also because certain characters like rats or dogs or mini skeletons which are traditionally not seen as powerful adversaries which can literally kill your character is actually overpowered in Elden ring. Which creates that surprise and frustrating element in the game.

Good effort but some subjects are explained using long convoluted sentences that make it more complicated than it really is. Also, the video often does not show the UI element she is talking about. A good example of this is the explanation of the range weapons.

I really love the combat in elden ring. It feels like dark souls but the things they added give so much more choice and freedom. There are so many options for dual wielding and ashes of war and basically any weapon is viable if you can upgrade it enough. The subtle additions like guard counters and stance breaking really add so much to the game. It’s very satisfying to be fighting an enemy that absolutely dwarfs you and knock on its face by slashing at the ankles. Jumping is awesome, it can be used to dodge attacks if you’re good at it and adding jump attacks into attack chains just makes everything more epic. Jump attacks have led to some pretty crazy moments for me, nothing feels better than jumping over a sweeping attack to deliver the final blow to a boss. I also like how aggressive you can be thanks to stagger and the improved move sets. I’ve had many situations where I beat an enemy that was really strong because I rushed in and did a lot of damage right off the bat and just kept hitting it and not allowing it to attack. Same with bosses, your aggression is rewarded when you break their stance and get a riposte opportunity. You still get punished for being greedy but being aggressive and still cautious pays dividends. There are a lot of enemies that you can stun lock super easily and kill them before they can even do anything to you. In the dark souls games you could kind of do chains like this and stun lock some enemies but not the way it is in elden ring. You can really go ham. I also love when there’s a giant group of enemies and you can summon a spirit and fight them all and it’s just so chaotic and fun. I haven’t really messed around with sorcery at all (I have been using incantations though) but it looks cooler in this game than it ever has and I’m planning to do a full on mage run after I finish my first playthrough. It just feels like there are a million possible ways to approach everything, and nothing is right or wrong. I didn’t even mention the horse combat, which I really like. It’s somewhat clunky sometimes but certain weapons are better than others for it and once I found a weapon that worked well it was a game changer. It’s a much more reliable way to take down big strong things like the golems, and the mounted bosses are really fun to fight on horseback. And everything I’ve said is just about combat, I could keep going on and on about everything else that is great about this game. I don’t think a game has been as hyped up before release as elden ring ever, and it is not uncommon for hyped up games to not live up to the hype, but somehow this insanely hyped game has exceeded expectations.

When she enchanted it, she was using the weapons skill(by pressing L2). This allows you to do a ranged attack when pressing(or holding I don't remember) R2/ heavy attack. The ranged attack goes away after awhile and you will need to enchat the sword again. Hope this helped!

When even videos like these don't help you... I made a mistake in not trusting my gut when getting this game. They made it look so good, so fun. I knew it was gonna be hard, but I didn't know that I wouldn't even be able to figure out how to competently play. Can't figure out anything, from combat, to how to level up, to where to go. I swear, every game I've bought in recent memory has been a disappointment, even fucking Lego Star Wars...

I understand the game not holding your hand but From Software really should start adding better tutorials in their games. Preferably visual tutorials or at least some type of practice arena. The Cave of Knowledge only covers basic combat and it's quite easy for newbies to become overwhelmed.

Agreed, couldn't hurt! I did want to mention that basic explanations of all the game mechanics are actually items in a special section of your inventory, titled things like "On Status Effects", so they're there to reference later since there's so much going on.
