Like Patrick, I had it in my mind that the long march of the tarnished was to the badlands, but it's only stated as "lands afar." So I think your assertion that "badlands" is just an EN translation thing referring to the highlands/MotG holds up. That said, I should note that an early concept art map lists the area where we fight Radahn as "Red Wastelands/Badlands."

@Crunchy, Hello! My name is Centered Tarnished. I have watched your live streams and love the way you present information and think critically about the game. I have been creating Elden Ring content for a year now, specifically applying Jungian psychology and the process of human development to the lore and by doing so have started to ( I believe ) get a more thorough understanding. In this stream, you touch on these ideas various times. It seems like many creators are turning to this idea due to the mass confusion and web created by FromSoft. I am saying all this because I would LOVE the opportunity to chat with you and possibly co-host a live stream where we can dive into these concepts and see if together we can connect the dots and provide a clearer story. Not sure if this is the best/ most appropriate way to contact you but I respect the hell out of your work and the effort you put in. I think with your rich understanding of the game and lore and my somewhat-rich understanding of Jungian psychology would make an entertaining video. I hope this message reaches you! Thank you - CT

2:29:30 what I have realized recently is that the fact the ancestral followers shun the erdtree is why they are spirits in siofra river. The noble/common ghosts, the mausoleum knights and banished knights at castle sol all appear to be different from these ancestral followers spirits. I believe that they are avoiding erdtree burial and rebirth through the erdtree. I also find it very interesting that they worship minor erdtree’s. I think this may imply that they are aware that the erdtree is damaged/dead already, but the minor erdtree’s are fully alive.

Blacksmithing for giants is about shaping iron into physical tools and weapons. For example, the great chains holding the MotG together. With Marika's hammer, it's a different type of smithing, that of crystalized life energy (runes) into the form of an idea/concept. I don't think we can draw a link between the two beyond the generic theme of crafting something useful through use of a specialized skill. Actually, it might be an intentional juxtaposition to show the physical and ethereal being worked in a similar way.

2:21:16 If we are to believe Melina, then it's pretty hard to reconcile Marika being opposed to the GO from the start with: "In Marika's own words. The Erdtree governs all. The choice is thine. Become one with the Order. Or divest thyself of it. To wallow at the fringes; a powerless upstart." (Grand Lift of Dectus Site of Grace) I would expect Marika not to uphold the GO as the only rule of merit, or equate it with the Erdtree if she was aligned with tree and against the order.

Good point. I could evade this slightly by supposing that Marika said that prior to the GO, and she’s talking about some kind of previous order

I disagree that the dichotomy law-chaos necessary presupposes a bynary order in which chaos is part of a structure: one can argue that law is not an inherent property but just one possible configuration happening because "order" is just one of the possibilities that can randomly occur within chaos. That way it is law that is itself part of chaos and not vice-versa.

That’s true, but I think if you take that view it’s difficult to say that order exists at all. Irl I’m sort of with you, in that I think order only exists in our minds, but order seems to be Real in Elden Ring, and if it’s real that implies chaos exists as its opposite, which implies order is the superstructure within which chaos exists

@@CrunchyVideos depending on how much elden ring draws inspiration from Moorcock's multiverse, the "superstructure" dictating that Law and Chaos may be equal may be a third force, Balance. The Greater Will (or the One Great) could be Balance (and that would also explain why the "herald" of Chaos is still one of the Fingers, just like for the more orderly counterpart of the Golden Order). Too much Chaos would result in an unformed infinity of raw Chaotic probability with no structure and no life. Too much Law and there would be no new creation, and no novelty, everything would stagnate and ultimately reality would cease to create itself, and become a static wasteland of sterile nothingness.

dating the giants before the beastmen based on smithing doesn't make sense. The descriptions of the beastmen weapons suggest they were made in some other way we don't know about meaning they were likely unrelated to the smithing we know of (ie: giants kind of smithing).

The greater will is just the universe of the game. The outer gods are the creators of this game. Problem solved 😂
