The first-ever Los Lunas Marching Invitational took place on October 7, 2023. The event saw eleven high school bands from different parts of New Mexico gather at the Tiger Football Stadium for a marching band performance assessment festival. The festival aimed to provide constructive feedback to the participating bands in a positive manner, helping them improve their performance quality and prepare for upcoming competitions. The festival is particularly helpful for bands looking to compete in the more competitive festivals held in and around New Mexico throughout October.
Band performances are evaluated based on several factors, including accuracy, clarity, balance, blend, musicality, tone, and intonation. Visual performances are evaluated based on individual marching technique, uniformity, clarity of design, and precision ensemble. Percussion performances are evaluated based on individual technique, ensemble precision, musicality, and functionality of design. Auxiliary performances are evaluated based on individual technique, ensemble precision, showmanship, and design. Finally, the overall effect of the performance is evaluated based on the design elements of flow, pacing, artistry, showmanship, and audience appeal.
It is important to understand the different performance ratings in a show. A rating of Superior means that the performance was demonstrated masterfully and consistently, and this is due to a thorough understanding of the show.
An Excellent rating means that the performance was consistently and frequently demonstrated, and was made possible by a generally high level of performance and understanding of the show. However, there may be some lacking uniformity, polish, and/or finesse in at least one caption area.
A Good rating means that the performance was frequently and occasionally demonstrated, but the success of the show is being compromised by a considerable lack of uniformity, polish, and/or finesse.
