An adroitly-written and thoughtfully-scored new work by an artist for whom I have great respect. Here's how I introduced this work from the stage when we recently performed it:
"Up next is a world premiere - 'Cats Eating Grass', written by our very own Eleanor Brimblecombe. The title gives you a bit of a clue as to what it's about - it's in two movements, the first is all about the spitefulness of a grouchy cat, and the second is about finding reconciliation and understanding with that cat. To depict these ideas Eleanor deploys a vast array of tone-colour combinations; its a work which treats the clarinet ensemble as if it's a full orchestra, so you'll hear intense rhythmic stabbing in the first movement contrasted against delicate and poignant overlapping melodies in the second movement."
