That exit poll was WAY off the mark. They predicted the Conservatives would have only 338, they got 376 a difference of 38 seats and that majority predicted if 26 turned out to be a majority of 102. Never write off our Maggie until the votes are counted.
@MS-19

Exit polls are interesting things. It all comes down to sampling - how many people are surveyed and in which locations - but of course this cannot be relied upon, given the huge regional variations and swings that can be achieved in some constituencies. Turnouts, both local and national, are also a vital factor that cannot be determined via the exit poll. A 40% share of the vote could translate into a substantial majority, but it could just as easily leave a party holding the most seats in a hung Parliament. There have also been elections in which the party with the most votes ended up in second place - as in both 1910 elections when the Conservatives had more votes than the Liberals, but fewer seats, or in February 1974 when they had more votes than Labour, but fewer seats. In 1987, Labour under Neil Kinnock represented a more electable prospect than it had done four years earlier under Michael Foot, but Thatcher's majority was up to 144, so it was just a question of how much of a dent they would put into that. There had been indications during the campaign that Labour would cut quite a swathe through the Conservatives - one of Thatcher's aides at one point was said to have yelled at another "we're about to lose this f****** election!" The exit poll figures suggested a hefty one, but the final result showed a more modest one. Ironically, it was felt that Kinnock could yet turn the tables on Thatcher; at her resignation in 1990, his shadow Cabinet colleagues were all for cracking open champagne, but as Kinnock said to them, there wasn't as much to celebrate in losing Thatcher as they thought - "we've just lost our ticket to winning in 1992," he told them, and his words proved prophetic.
@Puter4472

I think 1992 (which was also off) was the first time the new exit poll system was introduced whereas these early election exit polls are just like a regular poll the newer ones are outside polling stations in swing seats asking people to vote again, which is why they have gotten much more accurate.

Party leader Neil Kinnock would resign soon afterward and Labour MP John Smith would then be elected party leader. Sadly he would die in office two years later in 1994 never seeing the Labour party finally returning to power in 1997. That honor would go to Smith's successor Tony Blair who would become UK Prime Minister three years after John Smith's death.

The LibDem's predecessor was the Lib-SDP Alliance. The SDP (Social Democrats) were a party that splintered from Labour in protest of Michael Foot's leftist leadership approach. They eventually merged with the Liberals to form the LibDems.
@MS-19
3 жыл бұрын
The Liberal-SDP alliance had hoped to challenge the Tory and Labour duopoly by ejecting the one from government, or at least supplanting the other as Official Opposition. Having failed to do so in both 1983 and 1987, the decision was taken to merge, and the name "Liberal and Social Democrats" was considered before being streamlined to "Liberal Democrats" in 1988. However, not all the Liberal or SDP members wanted to merge. Thus, even in 2021, both old parties remain in existence, albeit barely vestiges of their former selves. The irony is, of course, that the Liberals had once been the second horse in the race with the Tories, and had even brought the Tories to a landslide defeat in 1906.
