The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked the Law Ministry to give it the power to deregister political parties that have not contested an election over the past many years. With elections of five states around the corner, the ECI is in the process of getting data from political parties and also going through its data on various parties. While going through its data, the ECI came across 2,700 parties that are registered but unrecognised. All these parties are enjoying tax exemption on donations. Sections 29B & C of the Representation of the People Act allow parties to receive voluntary contributions, but parties need to report every donation above 20,000 rupees in their contribution report submitted to the ECI.
