The furnace is surprisingly cool when walking around it. Only once the electrodes are raised up does it become really hot. Even then its not too bad once you get used to it. Obviously you have hot metal PPE as well but you don't get anything on you.
@kurtilingus

@@ThoriumWorksUK Huh, that's a pretty interesting detail for someone as clueless as me about how these operations work... Is the heat management/diversion/sinking/whatever just **that** effective to the point that there's practically no ambient radiated heat from surrounding structures via direct thermal conduction? I know there's very robust water circulation heat sinking involved in these facilities but always just imagined walking through one would have that "boiling syrup" feeling from the ambient heat present.
@Nms2k3

@@kurtilingus I work in one of these steel melting plants as a helper to the furnace operator. We prepare mixes that go into the steel we tap as well as taking steel samples and temperatures of the bath as it's melted down. The water spray on the electrodes is simply to keep them cool, makes them last longer, electrodes get eaten up as we melt scrap so we need to add sections on top regularly. There is water flow throughout the shell and roof of the furnace as well as some other equipment around it. Furnace shell temperature is around 400 to 600F and the steel inside heated to 3000F. You can basically stand right next to it when it's in full operation. The furnace outside temperature is childs play compared to the radiant heat when slagging off the furnace or a ladle filled with liquid steel. Even at 50 feet away it's like opening your kitchen oven at 350F and sticking your face inside. The radiant heat you can feel in certain situations is unlike anything I've ever experienced in my life.

This is one clean and quiet facility, comparatively speaking of course. Would this by chance be a new ARC Furnace smelting facility using the latest in technological machines and techniques? In Comparison to the ARC Furnaces I'm used to doing servicing around, this one is resoundingly quiet and smooth running. Test run perhaps? It's running at flat-bath - there's none to minimal cold solid metal under the electrodes, it's liquid steel and slag at 1600ºC. So when the voltage switches through zero, the arc is easier to re-establish in the hot atmosphere. In addition, it's a continuous-charge furnace so it probably runs at flat-bath for a higher percentage of the power-on time than a similar, non-continuous-charge furnace.
@AluminumOxide

An arc furnace is always loud when it’s beginning to melt solid scrap steel, as the arc makes the scrap vibrate, arc and spark like crazy. When everything is melted, it gets much quieter as the foaming slag insulates the noise from the arcs.

I think it's only dangerous if there's water inside the steel that vaporizes from within. This is just water being sprayed on the electrodes to cool them. It just falls onto the molten steel and boils off pretty fast. Molten steel is heavier than water so they can't mix.
