Honestly 1000w is nothing, the law makers just hear big numbers and go wow, no we cant allow that. A 2000w hub motor on 48v will just barely hit 38km/h on a flat or 30kmh uphill. Which you will get past by some fit lycra warrior at that speed anyway. That should be the limit.

When I was 23 and super fit, I used to slip stream behind buses at 80kp/h on a regular racing bike. The funny looks I got from cars lol. Will the law punish those that simply got fit?

"Why would anyone spend this much on a high end electric bike?" Because it's not a high-end electric bike. 250 watt limit in Australia is just about criminal. Try to take that up anything beyond a 6 degree incline and you'll see.

That Specialized retailer is talking about 1000 watts as if it were something super powerful when in reality, 1000 watts is nothing these days, and any bike can handle that kind of power. I have 2400 watts, and I don't see how anyone can get by with 250 watts, and I only use the power to keep up with my buddies while riding trails.

Correct me if i'm wrong but don't some 250watt motors can be tweaked and tuned so you can get more power for a shorter period of battery usage?

As soon as the commentator said we will see many more companies making electric bikes for the Australian market my stomach turned over, they showed only what is considered illegal ebikes after the comment, the Aussie rules are so restrictive who would want such an expensive under powered piece of rubbish, I own an ebike and is illegal and so are all the others which are owned by my friends and even the Australia Post ebikes here brake the rules by having a throttle that propels the bike above 6km/ph, thank goodness the police are not interested or unable to enforce the law.

Wow, I thought that ebikes over 250 watt where illegal to ride but apparently you can ride any ebike regardless of its power. Its just illegal to sell them. Or has this law changed since then?

Anyone that thinks a 250W max drive system power is enough to enable a truly viable transportation solution is as dumb as the lawmakers that are being paid by mid-drive motor companies to set that as he bar. A mid drive motor is wonderful for off road / mtn bikes but not necessarily a good solution for urban mobility. Regulations should not favor mid drives over say a direct drive hub motor so eventually the regulations will be changed to make both practical and technical sense.

Idiotic bureaucracy as usual. Let the bikes have the power and the range to do their job. Be an alternative to cars and congestion. If someone is doing the wrong thing then book/fine them. No one is out there detuning cars that can do over 110kph.
