Same problem on my whirlpool dryer. Here is what fixed it. I opened the back panel found the motor through a hole I could fit my arm in. I found 4 hoodie strings wrapped around the motor close to the blower. Got those out and works like new again. Checked inside the blower also and there where some things in there also. Hair barrettes, beads, Bobbie pins. My advice to you is check and clean everything before you spend a lot of money. My repair cost zero dollars! Hope this helps.

Either the capacitor or the motor is bad. Taking this apart will test your patience it's a good idea to either take pictures as you take it apart or make sure you line the screws up so you remember where each one is supposed to go. They are usually square headed, which I believe is called a Robertson bit. They look like phillips heads only to drive you insane.

from comments it appears that if it runs after manually spinning it while holding the door switch, then it is motor start capacitor that needs replacing? But if it doesnt keep spinning after manually spinning to start, then it is not the start capacitor.

It could be lint inside where the blower motor is. Lint gets damp then hardens and causes the blower motor not to turn.

Same buzz. I cleaned all the lent out from around the motor. Still buzzing. I hand spun the tub with the door switch pushed in. It started running So I loaded it with 8 towels a usual and I could not get it to turn fast enough to start. So I put 4 towels in got it running and started throwing more in. When I got about 6 towels total. The belt started slipping on the drum. So I think it’s the belt going bad. And maybe the start up Capacitor too. I need one every day at my house. So I guess I will fix this one later and give it to my niece who needs one. I’ll make sure it runs safely before I let her have it. I just don’t have time to wait on a fix now. GE dryer is about 6 years old. I put a new timer on it last summer. So i’m not going to trash it. I figured a belt might fix it. It’s running smooth with 3 towels as I write this. Hope this helps someone

Yep, I had the same symptom with my LG heat pump dryer: buzzing sound but it would work if I rolled the drum while holding in the door switch. I found this video that showed me exactly how to replace the “motor start capacitor”: kzitem.info/news/bejne/r46Mt5t3apigY2k I sourced a capacitor that had similar specs (10uF, 450VAC) and it took me about 45mins to replace. Dryer is back in business. Saved me $1500 for a new heat pump dryer 😍

10-22-18 I have a Frigidaire dryer I bought new in 6-96. Tonight it did this EXACT same thing, first hiccup I've EVER had with it! It's 22 years and 4 months old, can't complain with that! Anyways, identical as the video, I pushed door button with knee, pressed start button, gave the barrel a nudge and it turned on. I shut the door, pressed start button and it worked as usual and is still running. I will research the 'start capacitor' that's been mentioned in some other comments. That seems to be the potential issue with mine as well.

My frigidaire dryer started to act exactly the same way. Did you figure out the problem? The only start capacitor I can find is for the washer not dryer. So if it is there I am wondering if it is even serviceable?

@@ansis9970 Did you find out more? I have a 2000 Frigidaire dryer needing the 'spin the drum' kick start to get it going or all it does is make that buzzing sound and leaves a really bad electrical smell.
@ansis9970

@@DystrophicEvolution Yes, I disassembled my Frigidaire dryer and the dryer motor bearings were completely seized. It was not capacitor in my case. If you want to be 100% sure that your dryer has seized bearings too, then try to remove the belt through the rear access panel and try to spin the motor shaft with your fingers. You should be able to spin shaft easily and it should keep spinning on inertia for few seconds. Mine was so seized that it was almost impossible to turn shaft with fingers. The fan that is on the other side of shaft can stay attached during this test as it does not cause much resistance in my opinion (unless you want to disassemble the whole unit). Unfortunately, the motor on my Frigidaire dryer was not serviceable. To replace bearings I would have to break apart both motor halves that were epoxied together. I tried to squeeze in some grease but that did not help either. Since replacement motor costs ~$100 we decided to get a new dryer.

@@ansis9970 Sorry your project didn't pan out. Well, I tore down the old girl tonight and didn't find anything obviously wrong other than eyeing up the rear drum rotation post because it was dry, so I greased it along with doing an overall dust cleaning and squirting in some lube into the motor shaft ends. I reassembled and tried it a few times where it started OK. I suppose I'll know better once some laundry gets piled up and it's time to cycle the machines properly. I'm hoping it's not my motor heat locking. I'm fairly certain it's not a capacitor (no external capacitor) issue because of the stiff drum when the start-stalling would occur anyways, but maybe that causes a heat lockup. I wonder since the drum was out of lube, it likely strained the motor ergo causing an overload or heat lock. Not sure, but I'll report back if my project failed.
