Unless you research The "Dan" ~ you'd never know how complex the songs are; musically or lyrically. My Old School, is a single from Steely Dan's 1973 album Countdown to Ecstasy. The lyrics tell the story of a May 1969 drug bust at Bard College, named "Annandale". The incident happened while both Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were students there, the song mentions how a female acquaintance had betrayed them to "Daddy Gee" (G. Gordon Liddy, then the local prosecutor.) According to a 2014 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article, 44 people were arrested, including Becker, whose long hair was cut off at the Poughkeepsie jail. The upshot in the song is that the singer vows he is "never going back" to the college until "California tumbles into the sea"

I haven’t gone through the comments, but I’m satisfied that that most of their great ones have already been suggested, however, gotta hear “Rikki Don’t Lose that Number” as a huge hit and anything off Aja album all from the mid 70’s. Steely Dan A jazz band, hiding out as a pop band, is simply the best at what they do. The older I get the more I love not only their classic songs but their entire catalog. It's sophisticated and fun to boot.

'Rikki Don't Lose That Number'......really stand out to me, because I was stationed down at Camp Pendleton in 1974. Used to hear it on the radio all the time. But I also loved the studio version of 'Dirty Work'.

You mention the horns and all of the instrumentation that Steely Dan employs.. The had full access to the infamous LA Wall of Sound. Much like many had with "The Swampers" in Muscle Shoals I'm the late '60's and '70's. A truly magical time for music!

Steely Dan has made a big impact on my life and paved the way to the beginning of my newfound appreciation for music and it inspired me to become a musician. This was my transition from Rock to Jazz Fusion, which is just another level of musicianship. Steely dan prepared me in a way to appreciate the complexities of jazz fusion and jazz in general. I thought Prog rock was as complex as it gets but jazz fusion is just another world of possibilities; the music world is much bigger than i thought. I still enjoy bands like van halen, led zeppelin, the police, Tears for Fears, Hendrix, etc, but now i also enjoy allan holdsworth, chick corea, john scofield, tribal tech, yellowjackets, miles davis, etc. I am still 'discovering' rock bands and artists from the past decades, as i follow lists of albums, like rolling stones 500 albums or my own lists, which includes r&B, hip hop, country, rap, pop, etc. currently, i am listening to a prog italian rock band Banco del mutuo soccorso Listen to the album Aja, Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic, countdown to ecstasy. Favorite songs: Aja, I got the news, don't take me alive, kid charlemagne, Babylon Sisters, The Fez, peg, aja....
