Regardless of some of the negative comments, I think that it brilliant. An excellent idea. It is a prototype that works and works well. If more grip was needed as in heavy machining, it could be clamped in addition to the magnets. Loved it.

I know you’re loving the new shop being set up just how you like it. Very proficient, everything right where you need it. Isn’t it a great feeling, there’s nothing like it! Sweet little vise too. I’m making a simple electromagnetic base plate for an existing vise I have that my father gave me. I only wish he was still around to see the technology today, just flipping a switch to lock it in place vs having to bolt it down every time he’d use it. Great job, thanks for taking us along✌🏼

@geekoid183

Yeah, at 12:47 the video transition makes it really obvious. Adding more magnets is a solution for sure. Though, the extra heat generated by those magnets would induce even more thermal expansion which is not that good on a precision tool.

Great project and build. For reliability and better performance I suggest using another type of power connector, i.e. XT60. The one You used is kinda shitty, I had many problems with them. To improve the situation You can scratch the area around the middle pin and solder it to make better electrical connection and minimise power loses (and heating the connector, which might get significant with current above 4 amps);

Now, I did see it move a TINY little bit when it drilled the holes... So, if you are doing 'precision work' this might not hold it through the entire cut. But a SUPER handy little clamping mechanism for getting any angle you could ever want for rough work.

Prying on the magnet next to the open box cutter, and hammering the sliding jaw of the vise towards your thumb made me wince a little bit, but nice build otherwise. Make sure you take care of your health/safety.👍 Also, the shrink tubing on your switch. Do you think using one big one might pull the contacts close enough together that they might arc?
