Hi everybody, and welcome to my "stevenofpa" KZitem Channel!
This video shows you what it's like to see this used, defective, electronically controlled viscous fan clutch that was replaced on a 2014 Dodge Chrysler RAM FCA Stellantis RAM 5500 HD Heavy Duty truck with a Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. The fan was replaced because the bearing failed and started making noise, because the lubricant grease leaked out when the seal failed, then the noise caused the driver to bring the truck into the shop for replacement. During replacement however, the electrical connector to the fan clutch was damaged and broke off, so the fan clutch itself also had to be replaced :( but this gives us the opportunity to inspect the device and explain how it works which is pretty cool! There is a device on this clutch which reports the fan speed back to the ECM PCM engine computer, so it knows how fast the fan is turning. Then the computer can also command the amount of fan activity, by controlling a valve inside the clutch, which limits the amount of viscous fluid flow, so the fan can run at 0-100% or any amount in-between, depending on operating conditions and engine cooling requirements. Pretty cool!
In my next video, we'll disassemble this fan clutch unit, and see what it looks like inside. Great!
