Bravo! Another magisterial review, Lachlan! I'm *that* Bill, and I concur completely with Lachlan's take on the KSE 1200--both the good things (unrivalled transparency), and the not so good things (spartan build). It's a highly enjoyable yet somewhat enigmatic product. To use it as a true portable device, you'd have to stack it with a DAP using the DAP's line out (a very high quality DAP, because the KSE 1200s are ruthlessly revealing). That means you're carrying around a ~$4,000 brick that's not easily pocketable, and as Lachlan mentioned the included case is woefully insufficient. I tried such a stack (Blu Tack FTW!) and had the best portable sound of my sweet short life. But I also was carrying around something that looked like an improvised explosive device--only much more expensive. Not the kind of thing one feels confident in leaving the house with, or even carrying around the house lest it get dropped, splashed, etc. For me, the KSE 1200s came into their own for bedtime listening--they isolate well and sit flush with the ear, which is great for side sleepers like me. But this is the kind of device that you need to feed the best possible signal, which in my case made for a rather convoluted bedside setup: digital transport, Chord Qutest, an RCA to 3.5mm cable running to the energizer, and then a smartphone to control the music (Roon in my case). By the time everything was set up and running I was draped in wires and electronic devices. Not ideal for relaxation. Don't let this put you off the KSE 1200s, though. Once you hear them with a good source and a proper seal, you'll find the niggles aren't quite so niggly.

As an owner of the KSE1200s I concur they are outstanding - probably better than my Stax L700s and certainly better than MrSpeakers Ether C 1.1.s. Plenty of accurate bass and an eerie ability to track amps sine waves. Great isolation and incredibly comfortable - superb sound. Press play and forget. The other IEM in regular rotation for me is the Beyerdynamic Xelento 2. As for the IE900 brightness, try them with a narrow-bore tip (like a Final Audio E-type) as it can help to reduce the treble just enough.

I'm not trying to derail the topic this is just an idea that I that you may be able to answer. Back in the 70s we used to use an AM radio to check for noise from systems like stray flux etc. and for teenagers with no money it turned out to be a pretty good way of testing things for us back then but honestly, I do not know for sure. I recently took an AM radio to my PC, Mscaler, and Qutest DAC and I was extremely surprised with the results. The PC was by far the quietest, but the Mscaler and DAC was extremely noisy, even in all that aluminum. I have my Mscaler sitting on top of my preamp I'm wondering if I should move the Mscaler and DAC away from all analog components. I'm curious if that external noise is infiltrating my system. Rob Watts has done an amazing job of keeping noise out of the internal workings, but this external noise may be affecting other components in close proximity. Again, please excuse this out of band comment, I did know anywhere else to put it that wasn't an old video.
@PassionforSound
2 жыл бұрын
No problems for posting that here. For reference, I respond to comments on old videos too so feel free to post on older ones anytime you like. I can't really answer your question because I don't know enough about how AM radios work and what the implication would be on non-radio devices (e.g. a pre-amp). I do know that electronic devices have to pass strict testing to ensure that they are neither affected by or affecting the devices around them, but I don't know what range of frequencies this is tested in or what range of frequencies could actually have an impact. It's worth noting that AM frequencies are WAY beyond any audible frequencies so there's an argument that what you're picking up is no different to the noise generated by every oversampling DAC that pushes the generated noise outside the audible band. What I don't know is how these frequencies you've measured could disrupt the performance of components which might then influence the audible sound created by a component

The KSE1200s are still the second best IEM I've owned and I only sold them to fund the best IEM I've tried/owned which is the FiR Audio Radon 6. They're easy to connect to any DAC you like via an RCA (at the DAC end) to 3.5mm (at the Shure energizer end) cable. That said, I'd recommend higher quality DACs for the KSE1200. Something like a Geshelli J2S would be about as low as I'd go or you won't be getting your money's worth. Ideally, they're going to be best with really high end DACs, but they'll still sound great with anything, just not AS great.

Nicely Done. Off topic question. In searching for a new amp I was told by Schiit their Asgard 3 wants you to use a TRS cable ( 2 black rings ) otherwise it might short out the amp. I noticed my headphone has a 3.5 TS cable. I just assumed (never assume) these were going to be fine since they are what was supplied by the manufacture. The TS cable is a mono cable where as the TRS is a balanced cable. The Asgard 3 is not a balanced amp. I'm getting a bit confused ( not the first time ) . I don't want to damage my headphones or an amp. Have you come across this with other (entry level) amps before ? Will my Focal headphones with the TS cable be fine if I switch to a TRS cable ? Maybe you can shed some light Thanks in advance.
@PassionforSound
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Deadline. It's very unlikely that your headphones came with a TS cable because you need TRS to great a regular, stereo signal. Balanced connections use TRRS. To confirm, a TRS plug will have two black bands on it. A TS will have only one.

That's completely fine. Basically what's happening is that the TRS from the 6.3mm carries a left +, right + and a ground connection. The ground is shared to the sleeve of both earcups (this is normal), but the two positives stay separate and that prevents any shorting. In other words, you're good to go!

It's such a different experience that it's hard to say. Would the praised Monarch Mk2 IEM (from ThieAudio, 1000USD) using 3 kinds of drivers (1 DD for bass, 6 BA for mids, 2 EST for highs) be a valuable alternative if the sound resulting of those mixed technologies is coherent and "best of three worlds"? (hope you'll do a review about it...)
@PassionforSound
2 жыл бұрын
I'll have to try and get a Monarch 2 because it should be great. I don't necessarily think that it's going to match a pure electrostatic design in overall sound for a couple of reasons. 1) no matter how well designed, a multi-driver setup will never have the same degree of coherency as a single-driver solution. 2) the KSE1200 is a "true" electrostatic using high voltage from an energiser unit. The electrostatics in IEMs like the Monarch use a film that's given a static electric charge which then responds to the audio signal. As I understand it, there's clearly convenience in the EST drivers, but I believe there are also some tradeoffs. Having said all that, multi-driver IEMs can offer some benefits in that different drivers may deliver better qualities at certain frequencies (e.g. dynamic driver bass might be preferable) so it's never cut and dry, but what makes the KSE1200 so magic is the transparency of sound and that's very hard to match from any multi-driver IEMs I've heard so far.
@christianblais3350

@@PassionforSound Thx. @@PassionforSound "It transmits a sense of texture and airiness into the mids.". It would be good to have a glossary of terms to make communication clear as possible. To many reviewers make vague comments which I can only guess at what they mean.

Yep, that's what I thought. So it's bringing a sense of openness, lightness, transparency, etc. Sorry that I don't adhere to a single glossary of terms, but it's never that simple when describing audio.

@@PassionforSound that's disappointing. Having a glossary of terms is a good engineering practice. It helps with clear communication. Of course it can be added to or modified from time to time.

It would also add a lot of extra work to the channel and it's not my full time job so I really can't justify that sort of time at this point. (I'm also not am engineer 😉)
