Can you make a video of the rules of elekes? Like how to take care of them, what we can and cannot do when wearing them, etc.
@dntjns3
3 жыл бұрын
It's true a lot of the differences between traditional Ifa and la regla de ocha came from the desperation of the slave trade. It was always told to us Lucumi that divination was done and the Orishas authorized us to have their elekes to allow them to better assist us in the new world. There are still a huge part of our community that don't think we should stop doing this because our community and people are still under attack in the new world.

I did my research before wearing an eleke. I was told by my family tradition that it is okay to wear eleke before doing the warriors... However, I had to first take the steps to acknowledge the warriors, who they were and what they like, etc. Do shrines for them and such. Take the steps of knowing your ancestors is ALWAYS the first steps, because they will guide you to how THEY did the practices, so you don;t offend them, thus offending the orishas too, because the orishas would be like "Hey! I know this! I've seen this before! This family still exists!?!" 😅They may not know you directly, but they know you indirectly through your family origins and how they did the practices. Always work with your ancestors first! I always left water for them, then I did a reading with an actual babalawo or high priest of the lucumi practices who is kind and open minded who helped me further know my ancestors and get their blessings, and such. He suggested that with the clear water offering to also give white flowers and light a white candle. That helped a lot! The water is never far from its sources/origins, so I'm currently practicing the way my great grandparents did until I find someone who can do the rituals so I can further my practices without offending anyone. Based on family traditions, they were secretive in the sense of how they did things, but always open in showing their elekes and other jewelry relating to their religion. Unfortunately, society is still not ready in some cases for open practitioners of the religion. I get both sides to this... some who are okay with people who practice openingly showing their elekes and others who get truly offended by it. I wear mines as how my ancestors would. I tried the way others do with hiding them, but they like to pop out and be like, "HELLO! I"M HERE!" So I wear them out. Unfortunately, my work is physical so I wear them short, so they don't get caught. So far I never had issues, except for some health reasons due to having jealous family members and nasty practitioners of dark Palo magick or necromancy (I acknowledge the darker side of living and dead relatives). Our ancestors always protected us. Too many factors and events points to that truth. The things I've been through could always be far worse and yet I'm still here, plus things seem to getting better. So looks like the orishas understand my intent and passion for them, so they are kindred with me. I've dealt with worse from other living humans than I ever did from the orishas. Ase!

I received my elekes when I was 11 years old and I didn’t receive any warriors beforehand. Due to my mothers religious beliefs she took me out of the religion and I never involved myself in it again. I now as an adult am starting to get back in it and I again received my elekes before my warriors and I got physically sick! I felt very anxious and depressed and I didn’t know why!! My path has been interesting and blessed. The first reading I received the Babalawo told me I am Omo Chango and he put the Chango Eleke on my neck. I received my Warriors and I was given Elekes for each of the Warriors. I received my Egungun initiation and Elekes after that. Over the years I have received many other Elekes for various Orishas. When I got my Hand of Ifa they gave me my Ide, but not Elekes.

Iboru, Ibaye, Inside, Baba. Thank you for your thoughtful videos, I appreciate your service in the community. I respect the Ifa-centric perspective as always. I have my Ikofa with my Padrino in Ifa. I originally received my Ilekes with my Warriors from my godparents. I had no negative effects, on the contrary, they were a great blessing and assisted me before and after Ocha. Whether Elekes and Warriors or Elekes alone, I have usually witnessed positive experiences for the clients. However, there are clients who do not complete ebbos or do not follow counsel given either from their godparents or on the mat. One must be willing to follow counsel. There are no magic potions to solve our issues.

Hey thanks for the information. I am Fairly new to the religion/culture. Although I’m sure the house I am from is great, but because my Spanish is not the best I feel like there’s a disconnect and I may not be as close as others to the Padrino. Would never want to disrespect but I would definitely like to chat with someone like yourself who I feel I can easily be educated on a different level on the religion. The other thing is I have seen many with elekes and maybe again it’s because of my newness I don’t know how to acknowledge someone.

@JosephBabaIfa

From what I understand that Eshu is identified as the “Mother” of Elegua. In one of my Eshu videos I speak of Elegua as the prince that died and Anagui was his mother. It is a path that protects against premature unpredestined death, especially of children, being that her son Elegua died young. This path also deals with matrimonial stability, prosperity, and social/professional ascencion. She is the patron of mothers who have lost their children in some form of fashion. Hope this helps, Thank you for your support!

Elekes feel like they're a requirement. Just like paying to join. People who were raised by or in a Christian society think religion should be free. Many religions have a cost. I'm considering seeking initiation but I'm only 1/8 African (not Dutch South African either). Given the typical cost being equal to a year's salary, it would be a very expensive endeavor. Also, there's so many houses who would just take your $$$$ and "fake initiate" you.

Hey Joseph baba ifa I hope all has been well with u. I have a question if you don’t mind answering so recently I went & got a reading by a baba the orishas stated what ebo was needed we done it and my problems went away In the reading he told me that hand of ifa was needed so at that time the price was $1,000 I agreed and a few months later until now I went back to him and he said the price is now $1,500 not only that I asked questions such as how long is the process, is ebo needed, etc. he couldn’t answer any of my questions and told me everything was going to be okay and not to worry about it at all. I’m asking this because I feel like something is not right it’s an off putting energy he told me no ebo was not needed for the hand of ifa and my questions was left unanswered So what do you recommend I should do in this moment? I thank you for taking the time to read my question peace and love ❤️ Edit: it’s isese btw

@@JosephBabaIfa so consultas and receiving an orisha are two whole separate things? I'm just learning. Someone I know practices it and he said he would have to schedule a meeting with his madrina and about 9 days later he asker when was a good time for a consulta. He also said if I like it and want to get into it santeria she and I will talk more and she will be madrina. It's a whole detailed process.

Is it possible for a vegan to be join Ifa? I think originally people were vegans, the human body is not made for hunting or digesting meat. Many traditions have been manipulated and I think animal sacrifice is a innovation that is anti-nature. I am so attracted to Ifa/Santeria.
@JosephBabaIfa

Vegan people are welcome in Ifa, but at some point in their practice they are going to do very non vegan things, and there is no way around this. Ifa’s theology has been a proponent of animal sacrifice since it’s inception as one of the oldest spiritualities on earth.

I have to respectfully disagree. Humans (at least as pre-human primates up to the current Homo sapiens) have always consumed meat. Uncontacted civilizations are hunters. Our teeth are shaped to be for both meat and non-meat. Many religions involve sacrifice of animals. Some changed it to be money or expensive foods, effigies and incense as a sacrifice, as modernization changed how animals could be accessed. ATRs still require an animal sacrifice. There is a story of a "white" Jewish girl turning to Voodoo and getting initiated. She did not kill anything. I don't know how much she can advance into the religion.
