I scare only to the idea, (my blood freezes), what is going to happened, if the today generation of Greek actors & directors. Made such dark music (black & white), like the story line really is!! With a magnificent dark music directly from Greek hands!! Is real shame, because Greek TV networks, never plays such great movies which is born by Greek philosophers of that time!!! Only the close scenes (on characters faces), and the light/s of each scene, Jesus Christ!! Bravo Michael Cacoyannis!!!!! Brilliant performance by Irene Papa!! + the rest of the cast members. Such brilliant movies, with the real respect of (ancient texts), only Greek creators can really do. Is really ugly, why Greek actors - directors, don't film these movies anymore!!

Well, if I think that such art works were available for everyone in those times then I believe that from this point of view we ,modern ppl are nothing compared with those ppl. As we can't afford such high art every day! What was common for them is a luxury to us!

Clytaemnestra is painted by some as a tragic figure, but it must be remembered that she wanted her own son Orestes to be killed by her lover Aegisthus so that he would not grow up to avenge the murder of his father Agamemnon. Electra convinced Orestes that it was not a sin for a man to kill his mother if she tried to have him killed when he was a child.
@jasonhurd4379
2 жыл бұрын
And don't forget: Orestes was, as the saying goes, 'caught between a rock and a hard place'. Under the old law of blood vengeance, he was bound to avenge his father's death by killing the responsible party; if he failed to do so, he would be tormented by the Furies. But if he murdered a blood relative, he would also be punished by the Furies. Aeschylus only got him out of this dilemma by having Athena step in, but there is no such apotheosis in Euripides. A grim tale, indeed.

Clytaemnestra didn’t need to be killed after he’s husband however. She didn’t have power that wasn’t depended on her husband or her children (who now were against her). It was just revenge to kill her in the end. Like she killed Agamemnon for revenge against her child. There at least Agamemnon had power over her and overall, but she also gained from it personally too so it’s somewhat more complex.

Iphigenia from 1977 is also a great movie. The young actress in the title role was awesome. One question, though: the king was gone for 10 years, so Orestes had to be at least 11 when his father returned, or Clytemnaestra must gave been pregnant when he left for war. This boy looks younger. I like how the movie shows arid, stark landscapes and homespun clothes, not the Hollywood Technicolor stuff. One feels transported back in time.

Orestes appears in Iphigeni'as sacrifice as a little boy.Let's assume he was a toddler when Agamemnon left, so yes, he must have been at least 11 when Agamemnon returned.

@@locusta-bw2vd Thank you! How long was Orestes in hiding? Here he seems to be around 20 when he returns. Would you know where he had been living those inbetween years? My knowledge is a bit fuzzy here. I wish there had been more subtitles; lots of dialog lost for those not understanding Greek. I also loved Papas as Helen in The Trojan Women. She might not have been traditionally pretty by Hollywood standards, but what a strong face! All those emotions in her eyes. And the adult Orestes really had a profile like a Greek statue. What a great cast. I can watch this again and again.
@locusta-bw2vd

@@inganorden1816 I don't know much either, only that Orestes was hiding in Mount Parnassus in the beginning and later moved from place to place because Aegisthus sent men to search for him and kill him. And after all the fuzz (murders, torture by Furies, trial by the gods and purification for his crimes) he found his sister Iphigenia alive in a temple of Artemis (because Artemis had saved her, replaced her with a deer in the sacrificial altar), he returned to Mycenae as the new king and married Hermione, daughter of Helen and Menelaus. Hermione must have been much older than him, because she was 9 years old when Helen left with Paris. And Electra left her first husband, the poor one, and married Pylades, the loyal frend of Orestes.

@cicerogsuphoesdown7723

Anthony Lasalle Hollywood is not a genre. And the location has nothing to do with Anything. If a film is financed by a studio ( as I’m assuming you are referring to the studio era of Hollywood) that would make it a studio picture or ‘Hollywood’ picture. But given the fact the whole thing is in Greek, with Greek actors, a Greek director, and financed by the Greek government, its absolutely not a Hollywood film in either era, origin or ‘location’. The United states have a privatized system of finance for the arts. Hence the studio system and winner-take-all big money of American filmmaking. Other countries have federalized programs and budgets for the arts in the form of grants to help artists make their product with government assistance. The films might not be as flashy but it comes down to a difference of philosophy. Other countries view the arts as a public service. The US only view them (from a cultural perspective, not from the perspective of the artists themselves for the most part) as a means to make money. Anyway to make a long story short. This is not a Hollywood film.
