Thanks so much. These are not the type of records I normally would buy for myself, but I felt they should get a mention, with some warnings about their sound quality and tape source issues. I think I navigated that task pretty well.

Thanks for the quick and insightful overview on these. I’ll be trying to get the Yuseef Lateef if I see it. I hope you share what else you get after Record Store Day.

I think the Yusef Lateef was a good one, completely different from what I expected. Eastern Sounds is such a unique record, and this didn't remind me of that. Still some great extended pieces on here in serviceable sound. Presentation is very nice.

Enjoyed you talking about the Elemential RSD releases You’re right in saying that the live recordings are not the best quality and are more for historical purposes Don’t buy these expecting audiophile sound quality Good review

Yes, absolutely right. I had to be very careful to stress that several times, without taking away from what they are, namely recordings that fell through the cracks, and are historical in nature, not sonic showpieces. They are not the type of releases I usually discuss, so I'm glad that came across clearly.

I think this was the first I heard him play and sing! They seem like they were having fun. The recording is not up to Prestige or Riverside, but it's a curious find for sure.

These look like some very nice sleeper albums. It's a pity that they didn't go all analogue on the pressings. Regardless, it looks like a very nice presentation for fans of these artists and for historical presentation. I'm tempted to get the Art Tatum album.

They are very nicely presented, I think most were mastered by Matt Luthans, and of course Zev found original tapes, but probably were transferred to digital. I'm not really clear on that. The Tatum is a three record set, in a trifold. Just be aware the SQ is fairly poor. But as a document, you might enjoy the performances.

@@DorianPaige00 I'm in absolute agreement with you. I prefer more polished studio recordings myself. I often wonder about the people who buy these. Do they listen more than once? Even rare bootleg recordings by my favorite artists would be a listen once out of curiosity affair. I actually dumped any remaining bootlegs years ago because I hate poor sound quality. I was pretty careful to stress over and over that these are not to be sought out for sonics.

Historic recordings means they don't sound very good. Prehistoric recordings are just drums and chants over a crackling fire.

Well, yes in general that is what is implied when we say historic recordings. More about the historical nature with sound quality that often leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes it's a worthwhile trade off IF the performance is legendary. I don't think anyone would balk at old blues 78's because they don't sound great. But many times releases such as these don't have the importance that something like that example has.

I now avoid these "archival" releases too many bad experiences - form over substance

Yes, I understand. Not for the sound, as I stressed several times.

@@ThePressingMatters Totally agree that you did clearly send that message. Yes it's about the music BUT you have to be able to hear the music, I have some archival Bird releases which are so poor they are un-listenable which raises the next question, are they value for money in what is currently such a crowded space. This for me boils down to will any purchase get played more than once then shelved. In all honesty for me the answer is no. I have learnt the hard & expensive way these releases are not for me, there are better things to spend my money on, especially if you have already got thousands of records.

I see these as nothing more than documents. These type of releases are really not of much interest to me, as I prefer to hear polished studio efforts from these artists. I delight in hearing the engineering of the major label efforts these artists produced. I really can't get past the SQ and messy live performances. Many sound as if it weren't on their best day.

@@ergloo6660 Cd would probably be the better format since it's cheap. No need to spend $30 for something that sounds mediocre.
