Remember this match exactly!! Lena finally reaching QF at a Slam after 2000 Us Open, and just going for it against Amelie! So aggressive and determined 😍 For some reason I thought she was always freezing at 4r in Slams (her 2002 and 2005 seasons - so many strange losses: Fernandez, Schnyder - was leading 7:6 4:0, Myskina- led comfortably there, Likhovtseva- no words there) Such a shame she was not as good against Anastasia, but oh well. I'm at peace with Lena's career achievements 😊

Yeah Elena had a clear shot for the semifinal at the French in 2002, but it wasn't her time yet unfortunately. I've seen enough of her matches from 2002, she simply didn't have the confidence and form to pull it off. As for Likhovtseva, I never really got it either, but she also beat Clijsters at Wimbledon and one of my next uploads is her surprise win over Myskina at Montreal in 2004 (where she also beat Capriati apparently), so she was a dangerous loomer in general...

@@chriscze6153about Likhovtseva, it's not even that Lena lost to her, it was the style of it. It was another 3set close match, where she should have gone to the QF, and I swear they were breaking their serves all the time in last set, until Likhovtseva held, and it was over. Lena was super passive in that match :/ I remember watching Likhovtseva against Anastasia and Capriati as well, and she was playing amazing!! 👍👍 Such a shame her final against Amelie was one-sided.

I think it´s one of her best match in her career. She was very impressive this day. Her forehand was amazing , a lot of gutsy shot... despite her serve , her game was so complete

Thanks and finally a Dementieva win in two sets, although not that easy. These two created beautiful matches.

I personally think it was better at the USO 04 QF, but overall one of her best performances for sure. But you'll see the 04 USO QF highlights in a couple of weeks, so let me know what you think then. :)

So nostalgic! I clearly remember watching this on tv. I knew Elena had a good shot at a slam. She was fearless , her forehand was a weapon, she approached the net a lot and even her serve befuddled her opponents lol. Such a great year.

this was Elena's 2nd major quarterfinal ever...no way you thought she could win the title????

@@chriscze6153 This was actually the very first Elena match I’d ever seen and I judged her on confidence! She also beat better players on the way to the finals compared to Myskina. Pity she couldn’t pull that one off…

@@besamestreet I always thought Myskina had the better run to the final - Capriati was a huge win, and it was a surprise she beat Venus too. In retrospect beating Kuznetsova at the French was amazing too, because she would quickly become a vastly superior clay court player to Myskina after that match. I think Elena had the better run at the US Open, and Kuznetsova beat an injured Davenport, but unfortunately that was enough....

Elena is the real Russian beauty, not Kournikova.

Mauresmo was laughable in this match. No bite on her forehand at all. Also, isn't it common sense to target your opponent's backhand on clay if you hit with so much top spin? It was like she was giving Elena a forehand practice. Well, at least her loss made Myskina's path to the title much easier, so I can't complain too much :)

This is one of my favorite Elena matchups. With a few exceptions, their matches were always entertaining and highly competitive. Also, what's up with Mauresmo at the net, it seems like she didn't shake the umpire's hand. Were there some bad calls or drama?

I included as much drama as I could....I don't think there was any major issue for Amelie. But I completely agree, these two had great matches. Shame that the WTA decided to block several of my matches...

@@chriscze6153 Yeah, I saw that. I don't get why they do it, letting people create and upload their own highlight videos doesn't infringe on anything. They should be happy someone is taking time out of their day to promote the sport and bring some nostalgia, because you know how I feel about the current state of the WTA, and many tennis fans share the sentiment. I liked Mauresmo for the most part, she was a bit salty towards the Williams sisters, but I guess no one enjoyed their dominance from 2000 to 2003.

The Morozova years when Dementieva was at her most aggressive and actually cultivating something of a mid court game. Her serve was at its worst during this season but her groundstrokes were pure fire. I remember this being quite the result at the time, with Mauresmo the most inform player on clay that year having won Berlin and Rome. Your highlights are the best! So much nostalgia.

I'm mulling over the idea to create some "best of" videos, the first one being "best of - Elena Dementieva at the net." People seem to like lists or best ofs... Even though she came to net more frequently against certain players in general (Mauresmo, Schnyder, and Henin are the ones that stick out to me immediately), and her net approaches in 2004 were not always as frequent as in this match, her volleys were surprisingly crisp. I wonder if her excellent year in doubles in 2002 helped her mid court game from 2003 on. Because she was definitely showing signs of this before Morozova came....do we know when exactly they worked together? There is almost no footage of Elena between YEC 2003 and Miami 2004 so I'm not sure when they started. Last time I saw Morozova in the stands for an Elena match was Wimbledon 2005...was that the end?

@@chriscze6153 Also I think Dementieva had one of the most underrated overheads. She rarely missed one, which kind of blew the theory about only having a good smash if you have a good serve. Hmmm, I could be wrong but did Morozova start working with Elena I the fall of 2003? Purely basing this on the time when her form started to really improve and she made the YEC.

@@jmiller05 The only match of hers from the fall I have is the win over Rubin, don't recall seeing her in the stands, but she might have been there. There are actually several matches from after USO 03 I could get, they're mostly losses, but still. This is worse than when I was a kid collecting Pokemon cards...gotta catch 'em all....even when they're straight set losses....:x
