So I've seen this done before, where pointe is incorporated into pole but somehow the ballet looks sexy and beautiful-but not beautiful in the same way ballet is beautiful. This...blends both so seamlessly, you forget which type of dance you are watching. It is just sheer artistry.

+Maureen Seel I think (but I'm not sure about all the other people who did ballet/pole choreo's, of course) that the difference here is that Elena Gibson is a trained and professional ballerina. She didn't just throw on some pointe shoes for this choreo, she actually did ballet professionally for years.

I am so glad to see this.. I do aerial silks and can do some pole stuff as well, but I don't understand why so many pole fitness dancers and trainers encourage the thongs/ booty shorts and platform heels. It's such a beautiful and extraordinary talent, but so many people conform to the provocative stigma around being a "pole dancer" ; this is NOT easy and requires a lot of conditioning and core strength, and sometimes a lot of flexibility. After putting all of that work into something, I would DEFINITELY not want to unnecessarily sexualize such a great talent only to mimic likeness of a stripper.. do they just not want to point their toes? lol
@EAY2211

It is fine if you do not personally like the exotic side of pole-dancing but what I’m not comfortable with is you putting it down to elevate other styles of pole. Maybe some pole-dancers choose the sexy style because they want to show that there’s nothing wrong with being overtly sexy and that it can’t be empowering and not objectifying like many people make it out to be. This is the reason why I have mixed feelings about pole becoming an Olympic sport: it’ll be reduced to the fitness style only just to please the general public. Some people are so quick to bring up Chinese pole and Malhakamb as influences just to clear up pole of it’s stripping connotation. While these two ancient style might have INDIRECTLY influenced pole, we can not deny the contribution of strip clubs in pole-dancing wether we like it or not. The concept of dancing in sync to the music, the costumes, the moves and even the neon lights that many studios use are all nods to the stripping industry. The first pole instructor, Fawnia Mondey, is a former stripper and I’m sure she was more influenced by her profession rather than some ancient art she probably hardly ever heard of. We have got to stop modifying pole into something different just to please outsiders. People has to be appreciated the way it is and, yes, pole can be sexy the same way it can be sporty or artsy.

Anael M. Maybe you need to read my comment again. I’m pretty sure I didn’t say anything about not liking it. What I said was it that is a beautiful and extraordinary talent and I don’t understand the need to constantly sexualize it and it’s refreshing to see a video of the sport not being sexualized. Glad you could release some frustration or whatever, but I don’t care if you’re comfortable with what I said when you don’t even understand what you were reading.

Many people use the short shorts on a pole so they can grip it better, as skin holds better than material. As far as toe-pointing, wearing the heels can help avoid cramping in feet an legs from your toes being held at pointe for extended periods of time. Even the most trained and conditioned dancer can overstretch or under stretch. Wearing heels allows the feet to relax and help prevent muscle strain in the legs, especially with beginners am people who dont have the conditioning in the legs, feet, and ankles like most other types of dance

Some moves seemed, comical even though they weren't meant to be. Too many crotch shots. But other moves were ethereal and could not be replicated without a pole or wires.

I mean, they weren't intentional. It's stage with the audience in all sides. Someone is going to get a crotch shot. Additionally, it seems as though that pole needed to be reoiled, since the spin was halting and kind of inconsistent.

It was beautifully done, but some are missing the fact that strippers do those moves on the daily. Though I am amazed with her amazing strength and talent, she could have done without the poles. Maybe trade in for aerial silk, and then it would have made since. All in all, she had wonderful form, almost perfect. I give this a thumbs up.
@SobrietyandSolace

+Christa Rey We weren't born yesterday; we know what strippers do on poles and not everybody who dances on a pole is a stripper. You clearly know that because this ballet dancer is on one currently. Please do not project your negative stereotypes onto an apparatus that is just as innocuous as silks etc. If you've ever seen pole mallakhamb or chinese pole, I'm sure you're not looking at those performers (perhaps because the majority are men?) as strippers. It's a shame people are so easily distracted by the female body and a pole that might be construed as vaguely phallic, that the very strength, talent and artistry you have mentioned is completely invalidated. That's an insult to all womankind. I personally do not like the 'stripper type of pole dancing', stripper heels etc. because it detracts from the athletic and artistically-oriented styles such as this, but pole does not magically make someone a stripper and there is nothing inherently 'wrong' with using a pole as apparatus rather than some other object/rig.

Yea, strippers do those moves. I'm missing your opposition here - other than you thinking that sound the same things as strippers in a bad thing. Which, no? Also, heads up, strippers do silks too, lay people just don't know most Aerials try lots of things since there to busy judging that they think they know.
