Good podcast, thank you for sharing your brave story Elena and I’m sorry to hear you went through domestic violence & thank you Gashtak for allowing women to share their stories on your platform. One thing about this I did not like how Bangladesh is being portrayed. Few things were said are incorrect I.e the Chittagong hill tracts - whilst I appreciate she was going through domestics at the time in the country , there is a way of telling your story. There is no need to use a whole country as a narrative to get your point across. She is such an influential person from what it seems with a large platform it’s important she comes with facts especially as a massacre is happening right now as we speak in Bangladesh. Facts are important, she said a small snippet she has a large platform it will influence peoples minds and the majority of Uzbeks will have a narrative of Bangladesh now in their minds. I don’t like that and don’t appreciate it being Bengali myself. The podcast was over two hours, if she is bringing previous wars and massacres to explain her story, background helps. It’s not great using someone else’s country to make your story valid. The point about “forcing Muslims into the area and etc” is not entirely correct. When India was partitioned, Chittagong hill tracts was given to (East Pakistan ) Bangladesh the area then was just Buddhists/Hindu Bengalis once Bangladesh gained its independence the Chakma and Shanti Bahini tribe started an insurgency - in fear over a Bangladesh national framework where the government were moving more Bengalis to settle in the area, and encourage the language more not a religion but language because the Bengali Muslims were widely displaced the govt moved these settlers into CHT this naturally caused a alteration in demographics, the Shanti Bahini tribe a Buddhists group at the time conducted a massacre against the Bengali settlers point blank out of fear that they may lose culture, race, religion and etc. The Buddhist tribe at the time backed by India killed over 400 close to over 1000 Bengali settlers including women and children, torturing them, raping them, countless human rights abuses and then killing them late at night in the space of a couple of hours. There was no cases or incidents reported, nor did this gain any media coverage, the tribe at the time where the majority were Buddhists covered up the crime and none of it was published in the local or foreign media - hence till date they still claim that the Bangladesh government is forcing a religion, culture and language in the area when it was Bangladesh’s land to begin with Bengali Muslims being wiped away from their own land. No victims were compensated as a result of this massacre. There are still large communities of Muslims in India, and CHT being tortured purely over being Muslim , burning places of worship, attacking women and children all over “fear” that Muslims will occupy this area. This then lead to a conflict between the Bangladesh government and the tribe - whilst I do not condone the acts of the government I will say the next phase of the conflict was in retaliation over the horrific human right abuses against Bengali settlers after the independence. There were casualties on both sides however the military of govt were not conducting crimes like rape and other atrocities claimed by the tribe groups at the time, rather these types of crimes are what they conducted. Bangladesh is not anti any religion or race, it is Muslims as a religion who were feared by other races and religions which lead to this belief by the majority of people in CHT as you claim in the podcast that Bangladesh is forcing a religion on the country because the government reacted with retaliation over the killings of many Muslim Bengali settlers in the area purely because they are Muslims. There is deep rooted history here so please can we refrain from saying snippets which will influence minds and not use a country as a whole to portray a negative image. I have family and relatives who have lived through these difficult times. There’s ALOT which does not gain any media coverage because these Anti Muslim and Anti Muslim Bengali tribe groups have the backing of powerful countries with more wealth. Thank you and hope for your understanding during these sensitive times.
