When I heard Elena's voice as Abigail and Lady Macbeth for the first time as a young lad - at that time still on vinyl - it "clicked" in my brain after just a few bars. I got goosebumps from my toes to the tips of my hair and was completely speechless and enraptured by this voice. And I still have this feeling today when I listen to Elena. Of course, that chest voice is unique and never equaled by any other singer, but it's Elena's voice as a whole, from the lowest lows to the highest highs, that is so inspiring. Even when she reads the letter in "Macbeth," it sends shivers down your spine. Her voice is free and clear and she takes the listener with her from the first note to the last. And - for me, this is probably the most extraordinary and wonderful thing - there is a concentrated eroticism in Elena's voice, even in the quiet and undramatic passages. Her critics constantly accuse her of ruining her voice by singing in this way. That is true. Yes, she ruined her voice and her career was short because of it. So what? Do these people also accuse van Gogh of cutting off his ear? Elena couldn't and wouldn't sing any other way - and that was good. What Elena Souliotis left us in the years of her glory is and remains unique.

My friend you and I are on the same track. I had the opportunity to speak with her over the telephone, I made a Overseas call in Florence, Italy. She was the most Modest and remarkable person, you could talk to. AT that time I was studying privately voice, and told her it would be the Greatest honor, to hopefully one sing with her. What a Gem! I managed to purchase a 3 cd of her singing La Forza del Destino. I have a Decca vinyl of her singing Norma! Do you want to speak about power. I think that Bellini must have seen a vision for this role. I am so upset, because they cut one vinyl in stead of 3, she has only 2. Not for nothing, yeah Sutherland was good, but just certain roles, like Norma, is meant for Souliotis. When I heard of her death, I was devastated. I was rehearsing with a Chorus, for an Alice Tully Hall performance, and I was so upset, because, I did hear anything about her death. Well, I figured it out, it was because, Renate Tabaldi, also passed. But, not should have not been the excuse, not to mention about Elena's passing. Let's face, it Tebaldi was good, but she sang many Puccini roles, and when I found out she sang Othello, I said WOW! I have to get me hands on that recording. I am hoping that someone video taped her performance of Nabucco. I always said that Her Voice was considered close to Callas, but more Refined Voice and steady. She had pianissimo. What I really loved about Souliotis was she never felt like some of those Prima Donna's. She told me that there is always room for others. Her lows were remarkable, and her Highs were exhilarating. Please, if you have anything more to share about Souliotis, do not hesitate, please stay connected. Oh! btw, I wanted to say, that No one until today, can sing Nabucco like she did. But, I do want to mention, that I heard on the Robert Sherman's "Young Artist Program, one Soprano, that received my Approval. I don't remember her first name, but her last name was Nieves, and she was the only one that came close to Elena in sing an excerpt from Nabucco. I have not heard anything about this young soprano. Please, if you come across her, let me know. I know she has a daughter, and I was hoping that she would follow in her mother's footsteps. The MET needs more singers like Elena Souliotis. Ciao, Vincenzo

She was so viscerally exciting with added fire. The chest tones are so remarkable in depth, and how she able to produce such cavernous sounds.

Absolutely thrilling and she was a great artist with temperament. So she shortened her career like Sills. I do not agree that she tried to imitate Callas; her voice quality is her own. But Callas certainly gave her the impetus to sing like that.
