My respect and admiration goes to you and to all the tropical plant lovers in the US and Europe! Your hardwork and dedication is just admirable... I learned a lot of things about you guys like overwintering, zone weather classification etc! We also have our fair share of problems here but what you guys do in your gardens is really fascinating and inspiring! I thought I should put more effort and love towards my own, so everyday I clean the garden, get rid of the old leaves and such and maybe propagate every once in a while! Your dedication is contagious and I thank you for that! 🇵🇭🌱🪴

Thank you Michael. While you call it dedication, for me it’s called “tropical plant addiction.” 😀

I grew my Alocasia Macrorrhizas in water, since there are so many varieties of Alocasia, I don’t know if all Alocasias can be grown in water long term. I did plant them back in my garden in the spring. I tried growing some Colocasias long term in water, but with more sunlight in the spring there was more algae growing in the water and roots. It became too much trouble trying to clean all the algae, so I planted them in my garden too. I would experiment with your cheapest variety first to see if it grows. The one benefit I noticed is that spider mites were not a problem on the elephant ears in water. I think it’s because they couldn’t travel past the water, and their eggs and larvae wouldn’t survive in water like they do in soil. Good luck with your plants!

Thank you. I have the Jack Giant variety. I’ve been growing my indoor plants in water (smaller plants like the Pothos, peace Lily and snake plant) what I like about it is less stress about the watering schedule, soil condition and pests. I never had problem with the algae because they are indoors with no direct sunlight.

The Jack’s Giant will grow great in water. You’re right growing in water makes everything easier. Next winter, I’ll be growing most of my Colocasias and Cannas in water in my greenhouse.

Colocasias should grow great in your bog filter. I go to a koi pond store near me and they sell colocasias.

Of course they will grow in water, the problem is unless you add fertilizer they will look like yours, stunted and yellowing, add some fertilizer to that water and they'll look alot better

Thanks for the tip, I’ll add fertilizer this winter when they are in the greenhouse.

What kind of fertilizer?

@@sassybonnets1704 foliage plants like high nitrogen fertilizers, if you're a organic grower fish fertilizer and liquid seaweed would be good

I would think to reduce the algae to grow them in black pots not clear pots

I had many in red party cups this winter, and they grew algae. Next time, I’ll try your tip with the hydrogen peroxide.

Is the corm total submerse in water?
@Tropifornia
6 ай бұрын
Yes it is, the corms don’t rot because my greenhouse gets enough sunlight that the plants are still growing. If they went dormant, I think the corm would rot in water.
