25 Minutes of Elephant Life in the Wild!
The herd have endless adventures and beautiful moments out in the bush each day, but this day was particularly eventful, with bull, Fishan getting separated from the herd and somewhat distressed. Carer, Godknows starts the video explaining what happened, before we show you the scene itself!
Fishan has always enjoyed quite an independent streak and foraging by himself, if not with the youngest elephants and one of the allomothers, like Bubi. But having a slight limp after his accident in 2018, he tends to be slower than the other elephants in the herd. He always catches up and can walk very fast if he needs to, while the carers keep an eye on him. Slow and steady is his preferred way in life.
But on this day, the herd were moving through a very thick area of bush and the carers and elephants didn't notice Fishan was not with them. Fishan realised he was all alone and started to rumble, to call out to his herd, as he tried to search for them and catch up. When the other elephants herd his rumble, they started to trumpet and work themselves into a flurry trying to get back to him. As Fishan and the herd reunited, the trumpeting continued and all the elephants seemed full of energy and excitement to have him back with them. Family, after all, means no one gets left behind.
At the waterhole afterwards, Tokwe makes sure everything is alright before she heads into the water herself. Adine films some precious waterhole moments with all the elephants as Sebakwe and Tokwe, Mambo and Pisa, Fishan and Bubi all enjoy the cool dam after the fright of earlier in the day. Fishan seems to check out everyone's chosen swimming spot in the water before he heads in and takes his spot amongst his herd. Bubi seems very keen to have at a duck floating past her, while Sebakwe gives Tokwe a grand chase and splashing show before sinking into the water once again.
Lundi, Khanyisa, Timisa, Kumbura and Limpopo all stick together on the banks, with Somopane and Jabulani moving about around them. Timisa, Kumbura and Limpopo are all always fond of being in Khanyisa's company, protectively following after her everywhere.
Out in the bush again, close to the dam, Somopane enjoys a thorough scratch against a tree stump, rubbing his wet and muddy against the wood, while the females bath and shower in the sand, huddling close and lathering one another up before Lundi sets the pace again and the elephants continue on.
We hope you enjoy this scene playing out, from the search for the herd and the sound of those trumpets, to the splashing and bonding, between every elephant in the herd.
