“Rebecca, come here”, baby Rebecca comes running and maybe making sounds?
Listen to this; this could mean a name!! Recent research showed us that elephants are the only non-human animals to name individuals. And there's nothing to do with dolphins' "names", which are basically imitation sounds. Elephants are amazing. They communicate through the soil. They use their paws to produce vibrations that others can feel up to 6 km away. And now, scientists are trying to decode their language. They already identify noises that they use to greet each other and also to communicate when reuniting after a while without seeing each other.
Communication is key for them. Elephants spend the whole day looking for food, so losing sight of each other is normal. And when you're looking for someone, what do you do? Call her name! The scientists realized that some rumbles were used by all members of the same herd when talking to the same individual. And it had nothing to do with imitation or a generic label like "mom". To test, they played the recorded "name-sounds" to a herd, and when each individual heard its supposed name, it reacted super-fast!
