Graham, I am glad you liked the video. I'm in the process of adding an "N" scale section in the room that houses the winter scene. It will have about 7 scale miles of track (over 160 actual feet) it will have 6 blocks controlled by relays, and I will be able to run 4 or 5 trains on it. The trains will climb over 4 feet before circling then returning to the lower level. The structure is built, about 80% of the track have been laid & tested, and I hope to have it finished in late February or early March. It will be rural & mountainous with about (I think) 40% of the track hidden inside mountains. As for the New York aspect, the most out of place part of the layout will be a replica of the Brooklyn Bridge covering almost 5 feet going from one mountain to another on the other side. Poetic license I suppose. As you have subscribed, KZitem will e-mail you as soon as I post it. I plan one video of the finished project, and one of how it was built. I am documenting the construction as I go along. Cheers from Brooklyn, and thanks for subscribing. Paul

Really cool! It's ironic that I've been looking at the HO subway cars on Trainworld just the other day and then found this 8 year old video. I love your layout, structures, details and most of all, the El!. Saving this for when I put up an El. I will have a dogbone configuration with the run from one end to another at 16'. Waiting on the benchwork to show up. Cheers and thanks for detailed explanation of how you built the El portion!

Amazing! I never knew you could build a model Subway. My wife is from Brooklyn ( Bensonhurst ) and i went up one year for Christmas and i rode the subway into Manhattan from 86th St. We went to Radio City Music Hall and Saint Patrick's Cathedral. Unfortunately, i don't think my wife would be interested in this. You know how most women are. The idea for this just popped into my head and i Googled it and watched your amazing video. The New York Transit Authority Museum should have this on permanent display. Thank you very much for making this video. I was Fascinated by it.

I got started in I got started in 0 gauge 3 rail trains because I bought the MTA subway car sets when they first came out. It cost me more for the passengers than it did for the train itself. I loved riding the Redbirds running over Jamaica Ave. Mike's train house came couch with a Subway set for the f-train but they use the brand new cars that you only saw for a little while I wish they had made a set of the Redbirds with the f train labels and sound effects. It was so stupid of New York and all the other cities to destroy all that great mass transit that they had, it is so ironic now that 100 years later everybody wants green transportation. I remember reading that they had the Macy's day parade on Broadway because it was the only street without an elevated train overhead. If Lionel trains had made a subway car set they would have sold one to every kid in New York City. During summer vacation I loved taking the elevator train downtown to all the museums, as far as I was concerned if the train did not go there it was not worth going. It would be wonderful if the real world was as nice as the one that we make in our basement . I just would never by the subway car set covered in graffiti because I hate graffiti it is such a disrespectful sign of the times.

Wow, you must be around my age (79 in November) to remember those things. I actually took a header in the late 1980's when the front wheel of my bike went into the track on McDonald Ave just north of Avenue W. Two of my friends and I were going to Coney Island when it happened. Truth being stranger than fiction, 25 years later I bought a house on the block where it happened. Thanks for the kind words and the trip down memory lane.

Whenever I see an elevated train like that I imagine King Kong coming around bending the tracks up and derailing the train. Well, it is set in New York. I am working on a similar bridge that is both elevated and runs through mountains at an elevated position. Mine is for Amtrak with an elevated station platform. I am entertaining the prospect of adding a subterranean subway to my layout once I get to work on doing my wiring and get at least one train running first.

I know what you mean. If you look at my earlier videos you'll see that the subway was an afterthought. There were 2 things that led to the elevated subway line which was added to the existing layout. Sometimes the afterthoughts wind up being the best things.

Dummy, and one in the general area where each rail on the middle track are now. I have 3 different types of Plastruct stock. One is a girder that looks like the 3rd rail, one is flat for the covering over the rail and I is very thin for the cover support. The rail and support will be silver, the cover will be wood tone. I also have thin aluminum tubing that supports the "3rd rail" I printed out photos of the N.Y.T.A. 3rd rail to use as a guide. It may take a while. I have to make about 24 feet total, and I am very busy at work.

Stan, on October 30, 1954 the Culver line was changed from the BMT division to the IND division. As for the cars I use, they are the ones I like best, and considering that it's my layout, I figured it was up to me. The el is painted N.Y.T.A. green and it's a nice match to the cars in my opinion. I would have preferred silver cars, but the only silver cars had blue stripes, and they grossed me out, so green it was.

The section on the layout is my neighborhood, and my old store on McDonald Avenue north of Ave.W. Bonsai of Brooklyn is under the el, as it was for over 20 years. The station on the right is Ave. X, and my "nod" to Trainworld was done by 5 figure purchases there over the years. I'm sure Diane, Frank, Paul and the rest of the crew prefer it that way😄

Thanks Ray. This was built in 2012, and a short time later I built a northbound & southbound station on the right side. I then set up 5 blocks so I could stop the trains at different points. Not long after that I added signals, and using relays, reed switches and magnets mounted under one car on each set I was able to have them stop at the stations as they went around. There are videos on my KZitem Channel, (Paulietree1) of each improvement. I eventually went to 4 sets of 4 trains, so now they run as 2 8 car trains.

You might want to check out my video on a 6' X 6' (approximately) N scale layout I built in an unused part of the room where the "winter scene" of my HO scale layout is. As with the rest of the layout, I went a bit nuts and overdid it. Look at the video ( kzitem.info/news/bejne/o62gma2GhXWpjHY) not to replicate it. It was anything but inexpensive, but it will give you an idea of what can be done in a small space. You can also search KZitem for "inexpensive N scale layouts. Do what I did. Learn as you go. Start simple, then add & expand. Good luck. It's a fabulous hobby.

Vinny,The "el" is modeled after the "F" Line which has 3 tracks, so I wanted to have 3 also. The track is a dog-bone with 360 degree turns under the amusement park and in the next room as part of the winter scene, so they circle around the layout and the middle track is just for show. I built it using an aluminum framing strut, so I had to go with that width. I would have liked another inch or so to work with, but I am happy with the result. Thanks for writing.
