I was born in the middle of WW II. Over the years, I saw Winston Churchill lead his country until he died in 1965. I recall seeing the results of "The Blitz" in newsreels shown at the movies. I witnessed Queen Elizabeth's coronation when a bunch of us school kids piled into a classmates living room to see this historic event. During all of those events the moving sound of "Nimrod" was heard. The song is England and England is the song. Well done, "The President's Own". Joel Leson, COL, US Army, Retired.

Another quality of the band I really enjoy is the blending of the flutes and piccolos. The other is the clarinets have the smooth quality that doesn't become hard and some times squeaky with other groups. The musicianship required for the band to reach fff levels without breaking the sound proves how great the musicians of this group truly are!!! The performance inspires all other symphonic wind bands to be better and therefore should be applauded for their leader ship. I look forward to the band visiting our City some time in the near future.

Well played indeed. However, in my opinion, the most impressive and moving is still Nimrod by the massed band at the Cenotaph in London at remembrance day.

Just absolutely beautiful playing! There's no place to breathe as the music never pauses and it's Adagio tempo. This piece is movement 9 of Elgar's Enigma Variations and one of my all-time favorite pieces to listen to and play. It's right up there with Samuel Barber's Adagio in my opinion. Well done all!!

I love the Marine Band, and I *love* this piece. I played an excerpt on flute this month when we sprinkled our mother's ashes. She was an outstanding amateur pianist having started playing at age 4. She died at age 99. It was all I could do to maintain my composure to get through it, and I cannot hear it any more without my emotions welling and spilling.

marine band members, thank you for your beautiful music, and your faithful and loyal military service to this great nation, and it is a great nation, always has been, and always will be, I'm sure you agree? I am sure you inspire many especially in these times too. You all are awesme musicians and people. Your semper fi comes through loud and clear, good for you. I salute you (even though you're NCO's except Col Fettig), who I also salute for a job well done. I was once in the air force band out there in D.C. so you bring back many memories, I'm sure you understand? Isn't it just wonderful to do duty in one of the best military musical organizations in the world? It was for me too in the air force. You guys are A W E S O M E. Thanks for protecting our great nation in all you do. tom o'connor MSgt, USAF (ret)

You can find the answer in the Wikipedia article on Elgar’s Enigma Variations: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enigma_Variations. Look for Variation IX.

Thank you Marines. This, along with Albinoni’s adagio and that of your own Samuel Barber are three of the most heart wrenching pieces of music I know. The thought of listening to all of them one after the other scares me.

The arrangement was written by Master Gunnery Sergeant Donald Patterson, who was the chief arranger of the Marine Band at the time. He also wrote an outstanding arrangement of the overture to "La Forza del Destino".
