This video contains Ray Fletcher's talk as presented at the 2015 Barracuda Virtual Reactor Users' Conference. Afterburn is a common problem affecting as many as 1 in 3 Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Units (FCCUs) world-wide resulting in limitations in feed-stock flexibility, hindered operating severity, reduced charge rates and, in severe cases, even metallurgical damage. This presentation provides an overview of afterburn followed by a case study from a US gulf coast refinery which experienced about 50 F afterburn in spite of significant platinum-based combustion promoter (COP) addition.
The case study highlights how the Barracuda Virtual Reactor software from CPFD was used to:
- identify the root cause of the afterburn,
- perform virtual testing of spent catalyst distributor changes,
- verify the final design would be beneficial, and
- minimize downside turnaround risks.

UPDATE. This video was recorded prior to full unit start-up. Since then, the refiner reported that the afterburn is no longer a problem in spite of operations with lower excess oxygen and elimination of COP usage. Additionally the flue gas NOx and CO remained well within regulatory compliance requirements!
