Short film exploring the final years of Elisabeth - the last of the great blast furnaces to grace the skyline of the Black Country.
Between 1977 and 1979 the unionised steelmen at Bilston Works near Wolverhampton fought bravely against the British Steel Corporation's much feared rationalisation plan. After orchestrating a community defence campaign that inspired workers throughout the country the plant closed its gates in April 1979. Upon hearing the news, a union leader at the works remarked:
“We have been let down, not only by our trade unions but the Government, too. BSC has demonstrated that it doesn’t want the workforce. If the strong are not prepared to look after the weak there is very little the weak can do.”
Elisabeth was unceremoniously demolished in front of hundreds of angry Bilstonians in October 1980 - marking the end of over 200 years of iron and steel production in the town.
Since February 2015 a small group of volunteers have been researching what has been dubbed the battle for Bilston steelworks. Featuring archival news footage and the music of Bilston born producer Ozel AB, 'Elisabeth 1979' tells the story of the last 2 years of the life of 'Big Lizzie'.
