Cool video, the Dutch are awesome in the corners. My two cents... (if worth that) 1. Pointing the inner knee into the corner means nothing (almost, see point 4). It comes from motorbikes which are a completely different balance dynamic this leads to point number... 2. Cornering is all about weight, in motorbikes, the bike is 200kg so it's the heavy object, you the rider are light. So the heavy object stays upright and you tip over, dropping the knee, sliding off the saddle getting your weight down into the corner and yes scraping that inner knee on the ground so point 3 is the opposite 3. In cycling you are the heavy thing and the bike is light, so you stay upright and the bike tips into the corner. You put your weight down through the outer foot, you lean your body out. I like to pretend I'm trying to see further around the corner and overexcaggerate my upper boder leaning out (ends up being upright and is useful to see oncoming cars around the bend). Push the inside hand down to force the bike over. Not quite countersteering like on a motorbike but similar. So back to the knee thing. 4. Pointing the inner knee into the corner adds drag, it's kinda like an air brake. Now this may be a bad thing if you want to carry speed OR a good thing is you want to wash off some speed without touching your brakes. But yeah, you'd be much better off not focusing on the knee and focus on weight on outer food, bike leaned into corner and you leaning out of corner to 'stay upright'. If you actually got your knee close to the ground like on a motorbike, would you want to scrape it on the ground without leathers?!? Another sport with the similar balance concept... 5. Skiing. When skiing you are the heavy thing and your skiis are light, the same as cycling. You drive all the weight to the outer foot, point both knees into the hill and lean your upper body out of the hill. By turnning the knees into the hill it presents and then bites the ski edges into the snow and by leaning out it drives the weight down through the outer ski on that nice well presented edge slingshotting you through a corner. 6. Like a top downhill skier and fast Dutch crit rider get down low. Like Jesse said, keep the centre of gravity low but be balanced don't load up the front end. 7. Bonus handy tidbit, try to keep your saddle level. When decending cornering, if your saddle is nose down you will slide forward on braking, load up the front end of the bike, the bike stands up and you hit that barrier you become fixated on. Food for thought. Enjoy better cornering!

100 percent correct. Lean your body opposite of the direction of turn and push bike down into/towards the turn. Weight pushing down hard on the outside pedal at 6 O'clock, and on the inside bar.

Dutch criterums are also known as Een rondje rond de kerk. Freely translated a tour around the village church. Short parcours in the center of the village where mustly a church is located. Good luck to you Aussies!

Just awesome how you guys show your respect. Dutch crits (yes ‘rondje om de kerk’) are such an important part of cycling culture.

Great vid, something that helped me out when I started racing crits was to always think if the rider before you can take the corner at x speed, you can as well.

I started cycling in the Netherlands, made a pretty quick progression through the lower ranks and dabbled in riding crits for about 3 years. My best ever result was 3rd and I kind of assumed I’m just not that good. That’s until I started riding lots in the US - I was pretty shocked how bad (relatively) everyone was! Dutch amateur crit racing is at a crazy high level compared to most places on the planet. Big guys with massive engines and mad skills.

Great to see people getting into analysing bike handling. Been riding moto and MTB for years and been discussing and reading about technique but with road cycling people just got shitty anytime it was mentioned, probably because they don't have the skills. I hope this is here to stay, maybe Pidcock has done some good to Anglo road cycling. French and other Europeans seem like they were already talking about it.

In a book written by Bernard Hinault you can read that pointing your inner corner knee does absolutely nothing in terms of balance, speed or stability. Furthermore he writes that yo should keep your weight on top of your bike and hang into the corner. When you loo at skille cyclocross riders riding on road races you can see they lean their body slightly in the opposite direction of the direction they're cornering in. Leaning with your body weight into the corner wil cause you to crass when you're riding a slippy surface. Still most riders do this wrong especially amateurs.

do you downshift/upshift before/after the corner or just maintain the same gear ?
@Mincher

Depends on what comes after the corner. If there's an decent uphill section then I'd shift before the corner in preparation. If it stays flat then I would keep the same gear. The less you have to think about the better.
