I have 25+ years experience with 3D modeling as a profession. About 5 years ago I switched careers and don't do 3D modeling anymore but I still enjoy it and love watching others work. What is so amazing about this video is that the illustration of where everything fits in the spaceship. How many times have you heard someone say "I wish they would add two medium hard points and a larger power plant and this ship would be perfect. This illustration forces you to think realistically on what can fit in a ship based on it's size. Even with my background in 3D modeling, I never really thought about it this way and watching this makes me really appreciate the space inside the space ship relative to what its outfitted with. I recently returned from Beagle Point in my Phantom so this video really made me think of what it could have been like living in my ship for this long journey. This is just simply great.

The wood paneling literally brought out a 70s retro future vibe I needed to literally feel alive! This is better then I could have ever dreamed of seeing. Sometimes I close my eyes and imagine I'm in the crew quarters on my type 10, or python, or really any of the ships I the game. I always imagine them to be so, "industrial", but this! This was definitely what the interior of one of my favorite ships deserved.

I loved the wood as well. There is no reason to have your ship look like a factory like in too many sci fi, as long as you're willing to pay a bit for upholstery (and sacrifice jump range froma dded weight) you can even make it your own little marble palace. If your house was the barebones skeleton that ships are portrayed to be, it would just be a concrete or wooden box with a minimal lick of paint.

I was thinking about giving Elite a try, but I've decided I won't until anything that resembles your concepts are added. Ship interiors just hit that cozy spot and I think can only add tremendously to the gameplay experience. It's like first seeing Han and Chewy on the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars, Jim Hawkins settling in aboard the solar ship in Treasure Planet, even The Planet Express crew going on about deliveries in Futurama. Alien, Sunshine, Star Trek, The Expanse, Riddick, Interstellar, Event Horizon, Moon, Passengers, 2001... all movies that show amazing workspaces. Imagine smuggling, inspections, pirates, boarding, raids. Being sent into zero g, having to defend inside, having to fix damages, changing and upgrading rooms, or even adding mementos to the trophy shelf...space walks? Until ship interiors comes along I'll just be playing Subnautica, vibing in the lava zone, safe in the coziness and comfort of my Cyclops. Love the videos!

I rather imagine the ships generally have to be oriented for gravity, since they land on planets. More hand-holds would be nice, though. I won't hold my breath, but the smaller, non-spinning space stations should be oriented entirely for zero-g. Also fleet carriers and such (where they don't have spinning parts). I wonder whether capital ships like the Farragut-class would be zero-g oriented. We have seen them hovering above barnacle sites in the past. How many Gs were those planets at? I guess we'll see how it goes when space-legs comes out...

This goes to show that creating ship interiors isn't as much of a massive undertaking as people think if: if using a system like this, the only part of a ship that needs to be "hand crafted" (therefore unique to every ship) is the crew quarters. The rest of the ship needs only an empty area with designated module slots, as seen in the Viper video. The question is if the ships in the game are actually large enough (or small enough!) to accommodate the kinds of modules they're purported to, and for a few ships like the Viper MK IV, which is barely bigger than the Mk III yet has several class 4s, I have my doubts.

Cudos to both you and your friend, very well done, again! :D Feedback about the interior: I like it, and we can only hope that FDev puts the same amount of work into their game as you two did with your design. However, two things puzzle me a bit: First, the size of the crew quarters. They seems to be very big in comparison to the other internals. I am not certain if they will actually be that big; we will have to wait and see. Second, I am missing handrails and such in the quarters. When landed, the quarters work just fine, but when drifting in space, you would have trouble not only moving around in them, but you could not use most furniture either, as there is no way of fixing yourself to it. And I am just talking abot the furniture like chairs and the bed right now; I'd rather not want to think about things like the toilet... O_O This is not ment to be critique, btw, just feedback. I really think you are putting more thought into the design of the ships interior then FDev does; however, this assumption is based only on the fact that FDev does not communicate at all with their fanbase; they could have put as much thought into their ships designs as you did, but due to their lack of communication we'll probably never know. o7 P.S.: Idea for a video: You mentioned somewhere that your system of modules would not work with the Viper MK IV, as that ship is way to small for all the modules. I agree with you, and I assume FDev has not considered this when choosing what type and size of modules the Viper MK IV should get. If you want to do something Aprils Fools worthy (a bit late, I know), just do a video of the Viper MK IV... with the size of modules you have in mind... and just IGNORE the fact that they will be to big and stick out of the ship, clipping through the hull. Let them! It would be totally ridiculous, as it should be! ;) (Plus it might give FDev something to think.) If you want to do this, I would recommand to pick some goofy song to underline the nature of the video. I would definately want to see that, but maybe it is just funny inside of MY head, and thus not worth your time. If you find this idea even as remotely funny as I do, and consider doing it, please ask someone more wise then me if they would think it is worth your time (I'd recommend asking the Buur Pit, for instance). P.P.S.: One of the last ships I flew befor quiting Elite was the ASP Scout. I assumed it was - volume-wise - basically the same volume as the Asp Explorer (maybe 5% less?). However, most of it's internals are smaller (about half the size), and the optional internal space is also much smaller. So either it is actually much smaller then it looks like, or the crew quarters make up ... I don't know... half of the internal space? o_0 What are your thoughts on this? ;)
@JohnUs300
4 жыл бұрын
You make some very good points. I make my interiors based on some assumptions and logical reasoning. It's impossible to tell whether FDev based their interiors on the same assumptions and same logic. My interior model does seem to fit some ships better then the other. Some like Viper mk IV have too little internal space to fit everything. And some, like Asp Explorer seem to have too much space. This does not make sense to me, and I can't explain it using my model and my logic. So, as you said - we can only wait and see. It's an interesting idea for an april fools video, but I can't make any promises. Thank you for your feedback!

@@JohnUs300 The Asp Explorer makes a little sense to have lots of extra space given it's "explorer" name. It could be there is room for crew (so they don't go space mad) and also space for science experiments to be undertaken for things like soil samples etc. Actually that is something I would love to see in the real game now we have space legs on the way and if we ever get ship interiors. A room in the ship ( more those those that are designed for exploring) that is a "science" lab where things can be done to discover new materials etc. A few instruments that could be brought to improve results etc for more money later, adding more mini-games. There could even be a time element so you can leave the experiment running while you go off and do other things, maybe even in another system :D

These interiors look far more like Star trek ships with artificial gravity, than an elite dangerous ship would look like. Remember, ships in elite have no artificial gravity, so orientation doesn't matter as much. Metal flooring would also be needed so your flight suits magnetic soles can stick to the floor. Other than that nitpick, those interior designs are great! They would fit very well on a galaxy class or ambassitor class ship from Star trek!

I love this video! I especially love the style of the interior. However, in there is no artificial gravity in player ships so I feel like it should be designed a little differently in the future. Not like the International Space Station or anything since magnetic boots are still a thing, people can still walk around in anti gravity. But things should be tied down a bit, for instance in the quarters, there shouldn't be shelves but rather lockers in the side of the wall. Still love the style of it all and it gets me really hyped for what my Mk 2 could look like if they have ship interiors in beyond.

I love the interior (Nice touch with the Cobra-shaped buttons in the bathroom)! If I have any complaints about it, it looks more like something you'd see on a Saud Kruger, Gutamaya or at least a Zorgon Peterson ship (The FDL has like an option where Saud Kruger furnishes it, if I remember the ship description right). Delacy ships, and especially the Kraits, always feel more...utilitarian to me. Although, I could see an Anaconda having this, actually. o7 Cmdr. Johnpooky84
