I used to go to Kaiser & i noticed these changes when I would go to my evening appointments. So John Hopkins controls Baltimore? Hmm. I'm originally from Baltimore (city/county). After graduating from Morgan (1988-1993), I went into the army. I remember when Hopkins took over the old baseball stadium, Memorial Stadium, I don't know, or something like it......it's been a while. I remember back then, the running joke was that Hopkins was going to take over/run Baltimore City. Back then, Hopkins had a 24 hrs computer lab; i used to use it when our computer lab at Morgan (business dept) closed down at 12am. I thought that was pretty cool then. But now, wow. Baltimore better be careful & reign this organization in because if it is up to Hopkins they will appoint their "mayor" or "city manager" to run the city making the whole Baltimore City council, mayor's office obsolete. We are moving closer to having corporations strictly run our "government" making our present day politicians, government agencies, legislation branches, judicial branches, & executive branches obsolete, invalid, null, & void institutions. It's coming, if not already here.

Absolutely true. An even larger and scarier example of the corporatization of the Government is the US military. The military has grown so large and compartmentalized it is the most inefficient, money consuming dragon that our forefathers could not even imagine. The agency heads are all corporate elites whose sole purpose is to build up the military even more which inevitably requires a"boogieman" for an adversary. We have now it seems put al Qaeda to bed and are resurrecting the old Russian bear as our new enemy. In addition, China is also a new adversary, after the west industrialized China for the past 40 years. The globalists are the commies of old. Not so hard to figure out.

Columbia University has been part of the fabric of Harlem before Harlem was Harlem. The City College of New York (CCNY) has been part of the community's fabric for several generations as well. Hunter College now has its School of Social Work in Harlem. What is no longer in Harlem or in existence period is Malcolm-King College. It folded 40+ years ago. What do we need to do to make institutions that are supposed to serve us become stronger? How do we make institutions that are supposed to serve us be accountable to us? If Johns Hopkins is such a behemoth of an institution, what should people do to curb its power? How can Morgan State re-position itself? How can grassroots movements influence these institutions and those who hold public offices?

@@charonsferryold Nixon took us off the gold standard. So, banks were given unlimited amount of money by the Fed at an interest rate that continuously compounds and creates more debt--creating a financial bubble. That pushes down the value of the dollar. So, the dollar is worth like 3 cents from when it was worth 100 cents. And, the lack of schools creates more demand, so they raise prices. So, students are forced to borrow to afford to go to those remaining schools. So, if the government paid for tuition, then, there would be more schools--because, more people would be able to pay and less would go to just paying interest. Unfortunately, this is all too common. In Detroit we have billionaire Dan Gilbert buying up distressed properties in the downtown area (so many properties that the local media is now referring to Downtown Detroit as "Gilbertville") yet in order to build the brand new Little Caesar's Arena, Gilbert secured a huge tax break in exchange for a promise to invest in the surrounding neighborhoods. Well, Dan has his LCA and the affluent can take in events there but the surrounding neighborhoods are still languishing in distress. Our previous governor, Rick Snyder courted Foxconn enticing them with a $10Bn over 10 years tax break to come build an iPhone factory in Grand rapids (which fell through and Foxconn went elsewhere, most likely due to our decrepit infrastructure here). At some point the politicians have to see that giving away future tax revenue to the wealthy is a bad idea and eventually the bills will still come due! We all must pay our fair share, from the uber wealthy to the impoverished (true charities like Churches or Soup Kitchens should get a tax break though). By the way, the Foxconn deal would've brought thousands of jobs but they would've only paid slightly above the state's minimum wage - a rotten, lousy deal for the state's residents. As a society, we are incentivizing community failures with public money. Over 70% of Michigan's bridges are structurally deficient. People have died waiting for an ambulance to come, not because of a shortage of ambulance services, but because they had to be rerouted around bridges that have been closed for safety reasons! But hey, c'mon downtown (Detroit) and take in a Redwings game or a concert at Dan's latest money maker (if you can afford the ticket price)!

Underground, maybe. To the Moon. To Mars. Private islands. Sprawling gated compounds in the most scenic areas of the world. Sounds like science fiction but I wouldn't be surprised if some of oligarchs were considering genocide against the poor and people of color. They seem to consider the rest of us as dead weight and are steadily pricing us out of everything.

Thanks for reporting on this. I live in Las Vegas, one thing you learn after a while is that the famous Vegas Strip is not in Las Vegas, it's in Paradise. Paradise was zoned to provide a tax shelter for the big casinos, resulting in crumbling infrastructure and the worst schools in the nation. If you walk a mile from the Strip in any direction you are surrounded by poverty and homelessness yet the casino executives are worth hundreds of millions of dollars (if not billions). The rich create their own socialist institutions when they buy off our government it's time to take it back and make them work for us.

I am learning the homeless problem is growing more and more. It is like they are trying to push the weaker people, financially weak that is to the edge and plan on letting them die off. It is sad we are all people with many of the same needs. Where is the compassion over the greed. I have never been a greedy person who takes more than I need to survive. Something different, I'll try to be serious. When German engineers designed the biggest offshore wind farms on earth, they didn't consider corrosion. They said in their own words that after designing them, they thought they could forget about them. Not only did they not account for hi-speed wind particle corrosion, they also didn't account for stresses the new big wind turbines encounter, especially in a harsher climate. The reason our new urban condos will last only 20-30 years is because of global money investors corrupt regulatory governance. These big investors prowl the markets for government subsidized national green energy growth partnerships. The biggest investor groups get the biggest contracts, and commit the biggest frauds. Ever since 2008, the frauds and security threats they cause are super exponentiating under all scenarios. Global investors don't care if the F-35 and Boeing jets won't actually fly. The F-35 undergoes maintenance 10 X more than it flies. This is a feature, not a flaw to investors. Boeing hid training costs to win global investor brownie points. It's the same with the recent announcement of trillions for offshore wind farm factories. Instead of making new ones, they'll be fixing them half the time. When you mention how many bats and birds turbines kill, defensive cries about bird killing glass towers erupt. Green energy is additive, in killing, as well as total energy use. When dams were built in the 1930s and 40s, they were built to clear city air from coal dust. The coal plants kept growing outside of town and the new hydro dams only added more power to total energy growth. It's the same with green energy. Wind turbines are made of fiberglass and glue, and when they get pelted by sea dust, they puncture, fracture and flake off into the sea. The fiberglass layers of glue become delaminated inside, meaning the layers weaken and separate from each other. Offshore wind turbines use 1,000 X more copper than land turbines do. Their environmental resource footprint is off the chart. They kill both fish and bird. These wind farms will be massive, in both breadth and size. After the farms are built, tax payers get stuck with the maintenance costs before global investors sell and move to the next big thing. They did the same thing with GMOs. They don't care if their products kill vertebrates and insects. It's why we have all these nano particles eating our guts and brains. Petrochemicals are turning all male vertebrates female and making us sterile, weaker and stupider. Our jaws are shrinking so fast, that many cannot sleep or live without braces. Our heads don't sit atop our shoulders now, it hangs down between them. These evolutionary changes are happening faster than expected, which is secret code in this sub for, I told ya so. Getting rich from the next killer app is what it's all about, but personal wealth is a climate killer because the top 20% produce 70% of emissions just from flying and yachting from house to house, toasting the war on climate change. Kids don't think living as something more than human is 100 year old propaganda. This whole explosion of wealth and knowledge happened in 100 years. The old rich super powerful are the sons and daughters of the old new rich. The commies and monarchists have been fighting 100 years. 100 years is 1 human lifetime. The robber barons of 100 years ago are the global investors today. They use political assassins and media puppets to secure returns on investment. They piggyback and corrupt every facet of your life. We could legalize drugs and healthcare next week, but we're too stuck in the past 100 years, and we got 10 years to cut carbon 50%. Offshore wind farms stop delivering half their actual power in about 12 years, when their actual power is about 10% of proclaimed power. If the sticker says 100 megawatts you get 10 megawatts. This simple math is called the collapse of civilization, but there's more to it than that, collapse is more inter-sectional than all the mix-matched socks in my drawer. These offshore wind farms are facing particle and wind extremes that are heading off the charts. The engineers didn't account for stress and wear as we are or as it is, never mind as it will be going forward. The biggest component of green investing are natural gas owners. Oil was never important as coal, but because petrochemical use grows 7 X faster than humans reproduce, it will be more important than coal ever was going forward. Natural gas owners are behind all this. By 2030, more oil will be used to make stuff than will be used to run 2 billion cars. When economists or engineers tell you that we can get X number of green power by Y date, they are feeding you a complete line of bullshit. Green energy is the most corrupt business there is because the energy promised is 10 X less than the energy you get on a global energy scale. It's the declining material energy throughput return on investment. These offshore wind farms are facing particle and wind extremes that are heading off the charts. The engineers didn't account for stress and wear as we are as it is, never mind as it will be going forward. The biggest component of green investing are natural gas owners. Oil was never important as coal, but because petrochemical use grows 7 X faster than humans reproduce, it will be more important than coal ever was going forward. Natural gas owners are behind all this. By 2030, more oil will be used to make stuff than will be burned in 2 billion cars each year. www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/blade-failure google results: fiberglass wind turbine blade damaged pitted

Thank you for the program. Well informed panel and discussion. Lots I didn't know. We need to change the laws on tax exempt status. It's unfortunate that organizations that receive indirect and direct benefits from the city don't just offer to make contributions. But the wealthy are wealthy because they don't put out until they are forced to. There is no kindness or consideration in their system - we're talking "cold blood", which is why they can easily ignore the poverty around them. Fundamentally we need to change the capitalist system that breeds inequality, austerity, racism, sexism - basically group conflict - and so many other untoward behavior.

A plan is indeed necessary. However, to advocate for taxing Johns Hopkins as if it were a for-profit institution is to slide down a slippery slope. Our roads are raggedy. Bridges are crumbling. Infrastructure is crumbling. Research and development is not being done to bring about new technologies that bring the jobs of the future! New jobs bring better salaries. New construction, better homes, more efficient homes and construction. Increased property values. Should I continue showing you the benefits of paying taxes? Do you understand the consequences of not paying? Minimum wages have not moved for at least the last 15 years! Education is lacking! Millions of new jobs with not enough people fill them. Don’t believe the lies that the unemployment rate is at an all time low. Believe that there’s a large number of people working 2 jobs. Believe people are one check away from financial ruins! @@lkendrix7782 I think you are confusing some things here. L. Kendrix. Non-profit organizations as a rule do not produce income. They have revenues and they have expenses. They do not exist to make a profit. Their financial statements may show a slight surplus of revenues over expenses, but that is more for accounting purposes. I concur with you that the nation' infrastructure is in many places crumbling. However, taxing non-profits is not going to change that.
