Queen Elizabeth II and the mark of more than 70 years of reigning over England
At the time of her death, Queen Elizabeth II was the first British monarch to reign for 70 years and seven consecutive months.
Queen Elizabeth II is the world's longest-reigning monarch and Britain's longest-reigning queen. Her 70th year on the throne was marked on February 6, 2022, and was celebrated with her Platinum Jubilee in June this year.
Her birth name was Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. The Queen was born on April 21, 1926, the first daughter of Prince Albert (King George VI) - the second son of King George V. She is not the direct heir to the throne because her uncle - King Edward VIII - is the next in line.
‘Edinburgh made a great impression upon us; it is quite beautiful & totally unlike anything I have seen’.
This line from Queen Victoria’s journal followed her first visit to Scotland with Prince Albert in September 1842. Her experience would cement the Royal Family’s enduring affection for the country and its capital. From 1850, the family has used the Palace of Holyroodhouse as their official Scottish residence, spending time there celebrating the capital’s people and culture.
