That elk is remarkably calm for this entire procedure, amazing!

While admiring your video here, I realize there's at least three guys working there. Two in-frame and one behind the camera. What a great team effort! The narration afterward and the editing are great too.

Nothing left but the grillin’! Thanks again Corey for great content. I have loved going through your Elk101 course for the 3rd time and still get great stuff out of it.

Without a doubt the very best presentation I have ever watched. I hope to use your method on an up coming hunt in Norther Az. Tanks for a really great job.

Thanks for sharing guys. I saw this when it was on ELK101 only. Nice to see it's on youtube. Works great, just don't forget the tenderloins and watch your fingers when you do.

Nice. Gonna try this on the next elk. Had to quarter mine this year by myself so I just gutted it been doing it that way my whole life. This does look a lot cleaner if your just whacking the head off. If your gonna mount it definitely would need some help. Great job. Awesome video

Awesome! I'll be making my first elk hunt in September and, of course I'll be filming it! Nice job with the production. I've been following some Elk101's fitness vids and tips, and I'll be referring back to the other videos and modules as well!

Great video Corey, I am taking one of your calls into the mtns next month that I was lucky enough to get from yourself at in SLC at a show you gave a presentation at. One question, any chance you have tips if your hunt solo on how breaking down can be done? I know having help is ideal but i just moved west from New Jersey and do not know anyone yet. Much thanks for all you do and share with the world!

So i have seen more recently guys making the first cut down the back bone on the hide and then working from back to belly on the hide. Which method do you currently use?

Great video Corey. I've done over 20 elk using this method and it works great. To answer your question, we start at the neck and go straight down the spine. The limitation is if you do it this way you do not preserve the cape for mounting. If you want to shoulder mount the elk you need to use the approach in the video. We do not recommend a gut hook skinner combo knife where you have the gut hook on the back side of a sharpened blade. Too easy for the hook to slip while that sharp blade is facing towards you. Mistakes can be fatal. The best blade we've found for opening the hide is a Piranta Gut Hook. It rips down the hide and legs in no time, and the chance of slipping and cutting yourself is zero. The knife I use for this is the Bone Collector Rebel. Replace the straight Havalon blade with the gut hook blade and you are in business. 1 gut hook Havalon blade is good for a couple of elk, and when the blade gets a bit dull just swap it our with a replacement from your pack.
