My mother was in the first row at one of her concerts, and shook her hand after the concert was over. Mom's boss, also in the audience but in the balcony, saw that. The next day at work, he walked all the way over from his office to her desk. He asked her to stand up. She stood up, puzzled. He held out his hand. She reached hers out and he took it and shook it firmly and said, “I just wanted to shake the hand that shook the hand of Ella Fitzgerald!!”

Ella is such a jazz legend & performed for over 6 decades. She was known for her purity of tone & scat singing. Love her version of "Summertime". She had a great solo career but also did quite a few collaborations with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington & The Ink Spots. Some of their hits were "Dream A Little Dream Of Me", "Cheek to Cheek", "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall", & "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". This is timeless music that has endured for decades.

Not really disrespectful!! I do recognize the voice but putting a face on it--wow!! It almost sounds like Tony Bennett and I know he knows Ella and I believe he has even performed with her. I believe, whoever this person is, meant it to be a compliment.

Oh, I love, love, love Ella. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Gene Harris when I was performing vocal jazz when I was in high school. He tapped my shoulder when I was waiting to go on stage, and had a brief but sincere conversation with me. One of greatest moments of my life, to meet one of my heroes, and he got to hear me sing her song.

Ella was voted #1 in 'The Top 50 Jazz Singers Of All Time', with Sinatra #2, Nat King Cole #3 and Billie Holiday #4. Angelina Jordan pays special tribute to Ella's songs 'Summertime' and 'Every Time We Say Goodbye', doing the greatest covers of them I have ever heard.

Ella is a legend. Great reaction. Would love to hear your reaction to the late and great Miriam Makeba, aka Mama Africa, an absolute icon of world history. Either "Mbube (live 1963)," "Pata pata (live 1967)," or "Jolinkomo (live 1967)."

You probably live in the backwoods and NEVER heard of Sarah Vaughn or Helen Forest or Doris Day or Billie Holiday or Bessie Smith or Dinah Shore or Kay Starr or Jo Stafford or Judy Garland or Jane Froman or Kitty Kallin or---wait, I'm forgetting those vocalists from Great Britain like Vera Lynn and European continent---. @brgilbert2 Sarah and Ella are in the same calibre, absolutely love Sarah. Doris Day? Dinah Washington? Meh, they're okay. I do love Bessie & Billie though. I also love some other singers of blues/soul/gospel styles, eg: Mahalia Jackson & Big Mama Thornton. Are you familiar with then? I rate them far above the others you mentioned (Minus Sarah).

There's a famous story about Ella's friendship with Marilyn Monroe - Ella was playing small jazz clubs and couldn't get a gig at the Mocambo in LA. So Marilyn phoned the owner and said if he booked Ella, she'd turn up every night and sit in the front row with celebrity friends. He booked Ella, and MM was true to her word, bringing along Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland and others. Massive publicity, run extended, Ella's career was never the same again.
