The wonderful grace and charm of Billy Ruane here is truly heartwarming. I was lucky enough to speak to him on the phone a couple of times, and he was always the epitome of style and class. From what I gather he was a sophisticated, well-heeled and charming Boston legend, a one of a kind impressario whose energy and knowledge helped to form an entire musical culture in Cambridge in the 1990s. I only regret the fact that I was living in Boston and working office jobs at Harvard and MIT and missed out on all of this EXCEPT Mary Lou Lord, whose appearances at Harvard Square and on 'the T' (while coming to and from my office jobs) inspired and galvanized me with her forthright and confident, graceful voice with unexpected legatos and sharp insightful lyrics that lifted her songs to ever new heights in the nineties concurrent with Elliott's shooting star career. So striking to hear Elliott here play and sing with such ultimate skill, and to realize that his harmonic composition knowledge was right up there on par with the greats like Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. He embodied musical sophistication and guitar technique par excellence. Heartfelt lyrics.that make you want to cry with their emotional and intellectual depth. Nobody else in the world like him, and again a true inspiration for someone like me aspiring as a songwriter/singer/guitar player. Wow. We miss you both, Billy and Elliott!

Yeah he wrote a lot of songs and put them aside before coming back to them later. He was playing "Last Hour" back in 1996, Strung Out Again in the late '90s and others. Every time I saw him he had a whole new batch of songs, almost like his hand couldn't keep up with his brain. And even the songs Elliott wrote but wasn't happy with were brilliant songs. Prolific would be an understatement.

Does anyone have a date for this show? Some people might knock Elliott for “not feeling” a song 1/2 way to 3/4 ways through or just not being able to finish a song... but I like it... What he turns to ends up being better that night... as in the case of his very moving rendering of Miss Misery. It’s kind of refreshing when an artist says “This isn’t working tonight...” Granted this approach is not always appropriate... Thank you for posting Mary Lou Lord... I know you were buds... Like many people I came to Elliott dealing with some intense “issues” and Elliott is one of the few to get through my “barriers” and bring “healing”... and there are places that only Elliott can get to... Also, like others, some songs at certain times are too “intense” for me... I inoculated myself by listening to Nick Drake for a few weeks.... then I was able handle Elliott more often and for longer sessions... Ironically I had a counselor once, a very kind older gentleman... His name was... Elliott Smith...
