Thank you for sharing this concert Kane. Elliott Smith’s music saved my life when I was at a very low place while living in Portland. I first heard Elliott play at an open mic at The Egyptian Lounge on Division St. within a few weeks of arriving into the ‘Rose City’. I remember turning to my friend Jay Lukens, who lived in Portland and had invited me out to the open mic, and asking how the hell was this guy not playing shows? And then saying that if he can’t get gigs, we are totally screwed. Jay informed me Elliott’s band, Heatmeiser had just broken up, and Elliott was trying out new solo material. Little could I imagine that just a short time later, my friend Jay and I opened up for Elliott at Umbra Penumbra just off of west Burnside. I remember a kind, shy person who didn’t seek attention off stage, and rather wanted to know about you and your life. He even shared a Red Hook with me in the green room before the show. I miss him dearly and am forever influenced by his music and humility. All the love for making this concert available to us Kane. All the best and may Elliott’s music live on forever through all of us who appreciate his gifts.

I understand where you're coming from and I 100% agree, his performances should be archived, documented and restored when necessary. But in response to when you said "there's only so much footage of him", thankfully we haven't seen all of the footage of him that's out there. For starters there are tons of live performances on youtube, I've seen a handful of them but I bet there are a hundred more that I haven't seen. And there's other footage that hasn't even been released yet, sitting on a VHS tape, DVD or hard drive somewhere. For example this Fuji Rock show was only found and released a few years ago. With any luck we'll get some more in the future :) Long Live Elliott ♥

Wish we had more Mark Linkous footage as well. Most people are still catching up on how amazing Sparklehorse was. Elliott Smith gets more fame every day. I learned about him because of a story on his death and gave him a try and didn’t like it much. But eventually I was on drugs and in a bad relationship and I was suicidal and this really clicked at that point.

I've heard similar things from other people, it's interesting how that works. Apparently a significant amount of people walked out of his shows around the 2000-2003 period because he looked to be in such bad shape, but I really like those shows (especially the 1-31-2003 show) although admittedly his voice is a bit.... faltery, if that's a word. Some people say the 2002-2003 show were rough because he was high, others say they were rough because he was sober. Personally I think it's more likely that he was sober, he seems a little bit anxious and tightly wound, I think we would have been looser if he was fucked up on anything. It makes sense that if you get used to performing high for a decade, performing sober would be much more difficult and actually more likely to result in a sloppy performance.

Saw Elliott Smith at Irving Plaza NYC in 2000. Absolute genius and his career was starting to rise around this time too. Met him once at Luna Lounge in NYC too, nicest guy ever. Really sad a couple years later he was gone. RIP.

Sam Coomes! Check out his phenomenal band Quasi. I recommend the albums Featuring Birds or American Gong. He also played bass on Heatmiser’s Mic City Sons album which was Elliott’s band before going solo. :)

When you burn that bright; for as long as he did; the moths amongst us will use you up. I don’t know if there will ever be a more earnest punk than Mr. Smith. I believe he was fully aware of the cost of living wide fucking open. What beautiful work he left behind. St.Ides Heaven; is so god damn perfect; his self title is ultra close if not actually a perfect record. Thank you for posting this; the quality isn’t bad at all considering how long ago it was now; funny how time runs faster and faster the longer it goes.

Do you guys notice how they made everyone in the band turn their shirts inside out? Also they put duct tape on elliots hat logo! Maybe back in the early days of webcasting they were afraid of licensing issues!

I have to make sure I’m mentally strong enough to have an “Elliot smith day”. Not even joking. It might sound dramatic but it’s how I feel. Else I end up like I am now, a snivelling mess. Such a beautiful, humble but tortured soul. A true loss to the world. RIP

This guy had more depth than the Beatles. Damn, didn't know of him when he was alive. Damn, man. A Jeff Lynn of the millenium. Scratch that, more depth than Jeff, too. So damn tragic. Watch him play that acoustic, fills it out himself. A one man band, I learned it the same way, myself. This guy didn't require tricks or magic. He just had it,like very few ever do.

I honestly think he's one of the only musicians that actually sounds like the Beatles. A lot of others just fake it by singing like John Lennon.
