A far cry from the dorms at Homestead. 2 rooms shared a bathroom, had a vanity sink in each room, 2 beds, 2 locker style closets and 2 desks.

Elmendorf, 1961-1963. We had two man cubicles. Metal lockers on each side of an opening for a door, covered partly by a green blanket. The walls consisted of two 4 x 8 horizonal sheets of plywood , four foot width opened at the top and bottom. One 4 drawer chest for everything. We were on the 4th floor so no heat would ever reach us. Two miiitary blankets, you covered up with everything you had. You could set a drink can on the floor and it would freeze solid in a few hours. No tv or radios allowed. Break room or common area, are you kidding. Bathrooms in the area between our rooms and the next unit. Common showers, There were underground basements to connect the barracks with the mess hall, laundry and other buildings. In the 60's the cold war was very hot. The basement contained nucleal causality kits that contained morphine. The drug addicts would break into them for the drugs. Guards armed with only clubs were assigned to guard the kits. That didn't last long, they were soon out number and hurt. After a few airmen were shot , things got better. During the blizzards, a cable was attached to two buildings and you hooked up to the cable because you could not see anything. Minus 63 was the coldest I experienced. That's 63 below zero, not 32. I could go on, but do not want to discourage anyone. We had it good compared to the Army post next door. I visited , I think it was Fort Richardson, for 3 day in 62. The Army was recruiting pilots for observation planes in Nam and they wined and dined us, not really. To go Army, I would have to give up my little one stripe. Drink machines, wow. Glad things have improved , saw the mess hall, could not believe it. We had four walls and metal tables and chairs. Still, if I had to do it all over, I would, not because I'm stupid, or brave, but I believe EVERYONE should serve our great country in some matter, no excuses. One of the most fun duties was chasing the moose or other animals off of the runways, had to be real careful or you would be seriously hurt or killed, they didn't play. If the males were in rut, stay away.

+WildBlueYonder Lots of questions here BUT THEY ARE GOOD ONES! Do you know anything about the Junior Ambassador program? Could you add some information about it in your next video or something? Also, do you plan on being in the Air Force still toward the end of 2017/beginning of 2018? Thats when I will be in, and I really hope to meet you some day! You are one of the main reasons I am joining the Air Force, I LOVE your videos! :) Also, how is your application going for the academy?

Okay, so, this was freaking me out. I was there back in 1986 and we didn't have anything THIS nice. I thought, "No frikken way! This has GOT to be officer's quarters. Checked him out and......yep. Still, take note, ground pounders; this is how the AF lives.

Hello! I am joining the Air Force and I love your videos. They have been very fun to watch and very informative. I have a quick question about your room. When you get stationed to a base and you are a single Airmen living in a dorm, what size are the beds? Do all AFB dorms have the same size beds? I'm asking because I attended my first year in college, so I have a Twin XL bedding set. I was just curious if I would be able to use the set I already have instead of having to buy a new bedding set when I get to my first base. Thank you in advance for your time and help! I appreciate your videos and your service!

Holy Shit!, color me green with envy. Was at Elmendorf 77-79 and we didn't have ANYTHING like this. Two men to a room, shower/toilets/laundry rooms in middle of each floor and 3 floors per dorm. Break rooms (1 per floor) had a soda/chip machine along with some tables & chairs....that was it. Our barracks were at the end of the flight line and used to get some great shots of the F-4's, T-33's, etc. coming in for a landing simply by using the ladder to the roof. And the sky cops are probably STILL chasing moose off the runway so a plane can land.Summer comes around and we're ALL hauling ass for the Kenai and the spawning salmon. There were at least 6 guys with smokers and during the salmon season, don't think they were ever turned off. Get off work around 01:00/02:00, shirts come off, beer is popped open and everyone's munching on smoke salmon. Come to think of it, never did buy a fishing license while there...wonder if the statue of limitations has run out?One bud of mine had to check the fuel farm up in the hills.....until he and a grizzly met each other. After that, he refused to go alone or unarmed. He also found out that the trucks catalytic converter when hot, WOULD set high, dry grass on fire. During the summer, another would ride his bicycle to/from work which was on top of a hill, so when going downhill, he would really pick up some speed......that is until he turned a corner and there was a moose on his side of the road! He dropped his bicycle which was a much better alternative to slamming into the moose. Was with 6981st Security Squadron and we had our own fenced in/secure area and assigned sky cops. One was walking the outside perimeter of the fence in winter when he and a moose met. Mr. (Mrs.?) Moose apparently didn't like him and went charging after him. He tried running, but knew he wasn't going to make it to safety, so he tossed his M-16 to one side and jumped onto the fence and climbed over it. Which set off a shit load of alarms as the fence was wired. From time to time we'd have our "base is under attack" drills which meant about 60+ people would go to the basement and the doors closed....which wasn't too bad at first, but then the room would start heating up from so many bodies and don't ask about the air quality. Good thing no one had to take a dump during this time (30-45 minutes) because all we had was 2, 50 gallon drums with scaffolding around them. Worked comm center and during winter, I could see ice forming up on the walls inside there.

You must have been in same barracks I was in 1967 and 1968, two men to a room, showers and bathroom, toilets, laundry in middle of barracks and 3 floors with one break room per floor in middle. One locker each in room and we had a wash basin where we could shave and wash face in front of mirror. These guys have nicer apartments than i have where I now live. This is first time I have seen the new barracks. I am amazed. Wish the Air Force would let me tour the new barracks since i have seen the video. Just amazed. Were you on Fighter drive? Near that big long building seems like it was mattanuska Hall. Had that long chute where we entered and post office, chow hall, laundry, BX, barber and Temporary housing also in that building. Is that close to where you were?

I ran across you by accident I must say you put out a very high quality video.. the only problem with all the dorm videos I've run across is you guys have no idea how good you have it. I was in the service in the 1980s my dorm was a metal box so it was hot in the summer cold in the winter there was no air conditioning.. we had bathrooms in the hall which everybody on that floor used. No weight rooms or kitchens in our room. We didn't have a laundry room we had one washer and dryer on each floor for approximately 100 people.. your dormitory looks like a hotel.. my friend enjoy your time in the service later on in life you'll realize if you haven't already it was probably some of the best times I've ever had... I didn't notice what your MOS was mine was aircraft maintenance so you always got the better dorms because we were in the Air Force not the Chair Force lol I wish you well

Well can you picture 1958 and 1959 in your mind. I was in the 5004thAISS. We worked at 6 mile lake. WE used a Ton and half vehicle go to work. Barracks were new but 4 to a room. Upper and lower bunks. Then I was assigned to work at the "Kremlin". Alaskan Air Command headquarters. I worked in a Vault. I recall temperature of minus 23 degrees. I made E4 in 27 months. I recall pulling KP quite a lot. It was only 8 hours. If you needed extra money I would get $20 for 8 hours. Tom Young and I am 84 years old now. Tpm84 ..
