ABOUT THE SCORE: This 1971 Randal Fleischer thriller sees Mia Farrow as a recently-blinded woman stalked by a psychopath while vacationing at her family's countryside estate. Elmer Bernstein's short but effective score is bisected between thriller-scoring elements somewhat standard for the era, with his trademark staccato brass rhythms accented by electric bass and drums for the film's antagonist, while elsewhere Bernstein provides utterly gorgeous pastoral writing for Mia Farrow's character. It is the later element that this listeners finds especially rich and rewarding - the autumnal setting of the film allows the composer to orchestrate his music with the requisite florid colors that typify his most dramatically-rewarding and expressive music. Gorgeous stuff to behold. Jack Hayes and Leo Shuken provide orchestrations while Bernstein conducts the (great-sounding) recording. Thanks to Intrada records for releasing this gem.
