another interesting post! i wonder what causes it to go dormant. i've tried multiple ways of keeping a floating plant, duckweed, and i have no idea what determines its success. some of my tanks with the same water chemistry and lighting as the rest just won't support it. later on, those same tanks will have a huge layer of it growing without any discernible changes to the tank. sometimes high light will kill it, sometimes that seems like exactly what's making it grow so quickly. sometimes it grows in dark, dirty tanks, sometimes it only takes off when the water is pristine. for a plant that's so easy to grow, it's not easy to understand!

It seems to me that limited space and nutrition lead to plant go dormant - I did not see such reaction in larger aquariums with fish.

I have an idea. You could section off a small area of each jar with a piece of mosquito net or tulle and culture moina alongside your guppies. The baby moina will make it through the netting, while the adults will stay on their side. Guppies can eat the baby moina, and the moina will clear up the single-celled algae. I have a self-sustaining bowl with shrimp, guppy grass, seed shrimp, and moina. Shrimp don't eat the moina, so I didn't need to use a net. The moina act as natural filters, solving the green water problem I was encountering before.

Why shrimps don't eat moina?

Great idea! Previously I used filamentous algae for that purpose (as netting) - fish could not get into mesh of filamentous algae :) I've been experimenting with scuds on this matter without use of netting or such. The results...hmm...promising ;)

really nice, thanks! to stop the algae growth, would it help to regularly trim the elodea, so that it still consumes the nutrients in the water?
@4me

Thank you! Trimming aquatic plants surely helps me to keep algae from blooming :) Also, I have land plants growing with root in water to help this matter as well ;) Check my videos about sustainable aquariums for more details: kzitem.info/news/bejne/sZemy2yfiaCFZaA All the best on your adventure!

I'm so surprised to the result. I thought the Elodea would be survive in the 2nd and 3rd bottle. But they turn out become dormant. I am interested why they cannot alive in the good condition.

@@4me Great! I'm looking forward to seeing it. Is it any improvement for the 2nd and 3rd bottles that might make them suitable for the Elodea?
@4me
4 жыл бұрын
@@moudaktan It seems easier to prevent the plants from going dormant than implement improvements in hope for recovery. Just remove the old wilted parts of the plants before algae starts building up - that's all it takes to keep the plant growing ;)

Hello, I got the same type of jars (5liters) with elodea, valisneria & some floating plants inside, they all are sealed ecosystems with no fish (%25 air + 25% soil + 50% water space). I use garden soil under river sand. All are in front of the window but none are getting any sun. I got very few algae and crazy growth. Before i tried with fish but no success. Where do you find the seed shrimp ? collected locally ?

If you want to make a self sustaining aquarium, I would add a land area in the aquarium. Nature has land and water. They are all connected and rely on each other :)

Если элодея впадает в спячку на несколько месяцев и никак это предотвратить невозможно, то как она подходит для аквариума, вызывая своей бездеятельностью бурный рост водорослей?
