The THREE BEST backup singers AND musicians in Music History in The Elton John Band.... Dee Murray (bass guitar), Nigel Olsson (drums) and Davey Johnstone (multiple stringed instruments) who were the usual backup singers on the majority of EJ songs...a FULL and an AMAZING vocal blend, with ear orgasmic harmonies of SOFT to POWERFUL backups for just THREE guys!

"Ticking" from this same album is muy bueno, also. If I were Weird Al, I might simply change it from "the sun" to "your sun", which might add a different nuance to the song and singer. But alas, I am not Weird Al. I am not even Carrot Top. (Ask your granny.) Great to hear this again.

One of my favorite songs! Decades after it came out, it featured prominently in the drunken karaoke I would occasionally perform, alone in my apartment, as my divorce was pending. Sounds morbid, but the music got me through it, and it is not a sad association, but a celebration of what good music means to us. Those moments when music touched us were, and continues to be, the soundtrack of our lives. Damn, our generation's soundtrack was fucking great! ;-]

But a small handful, every song on his albums from Empty Sky to Captain Fantastic are so listenable and amazing. As a fan since childhood, I was 9 when his first album came out, over the years my favorites shift and turn to some of the deep cuts and then back to the classics. I think, maybe save Paul McCartney, his songs, melody and harmonies and playing and singing, and lyrics by Bernie, might be the best of the last century.

These days the version with George Michael is better known, but I far prefer this one. Apart from having the advantage of his younger voice*, the sparseness (and the amount of "room noise" in the mix) in those first verse(s) makes a difference: it sounds like a depressed, isolated, person. (* To think he nearly retracted the song from the album because he thought his vocal wasn't good enough!)

ELTON. Nobody calls him John. What about the music and production? It’s interesting how you focus on lyrics and not the music. Back in the day, it was the opposite. Music first and lyrics second. That music in this song is impeccable.
