One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Sir Elton John is pure perfection. This is one of my absolutely most favorite songs of his!

One of his most underrated songs! It’s fantastic! He and Bernie really killed it

I think this song came into its own with the elder Elton John, I have heard and like the 1970 version but the slower more emotional 1990s version is the pennicle of it. I hope Elton and Bernie do reunion album - seems both like wine have only gotten better with time

One of the "early" EJ tunes that has improved with his more seasoned and mature voice. Note how he holds the "money" note (the word 'control') in both verses.

Thanks for pointing that out! It's true! I also like how he sings this "straight" like on the original album. He doesn't do the thing on "turn" that he does in so many other live performances. I'll have to go listen to the other ones and see what it is that he does that annoys me. Lol ETA: I went back and listened to another live performance and I figured out what he often does that annoys me: in the chorus, on the first "I need you to turn to", he usually puts a little grace note going down on the word "turn". I don't like that for some reason lol. I like it better when he plays it straight and just sings the note. Just like on the original recording, I guess.

This is so utterly beautiful. really he is unmatched when it comes to simple but deeply affecting melodies. Listening to this brings such pure emotions that really reminds me why music is so important to me.

That lyric never made logical sense to me. It's taken me a lifetime to start to understand it. I don't know if I yet do. Anyone?

You're not a ship to carry my life You are nailed to my love in many lonely nights I've strayed from the cottages and found myself here For I need your love, your love protects my fears And I wonder sometimes, and I know I'm unkind But I need you to turn to when I act so blind And I need you to turn to when I lose control You're my guardian angel who keeps out the cold Did you paint your smile on when I said I knew That my reason for living was for loving you We're related in feeling, but you're high above You're pure and you're gentle, with the grace of a dove And I wonder sometimes, and I know I'm unkind But I need you to turn to when I act so blind And I need you to turn to when I lose control You're my guardian angel who keeps out the cold

Wow I never thought of that, but you're right! To me, at 12, it was just all mixed up with my first crush. How that person is the first time someone becomes EVERYTHING to you.

While i agree his 2003+ voice has deteriorated slowly but this performance is amazing. Eltons still badass my opinion his voice was best in 79, 84,85,88-02

he had throat surgery in 86 I think it was, left him with a more gutural sound - I saw him in Austraila in 87 while slightly different it seemed to add something that was missing.
