Found this video just now. I have that Anthology as well, and my copy is equally as "well used" as yours. :-) Thanks for your reviews and all other videos in here on Elton's songs, much appreciated.

So great to hear from you again, John! A few thoughts: * I always rolled my eyes at the fact that they published the sheet music for "Philadelphia Freedom" in a drastically different key from the recording. Elton's never even *performed* the song in F! The song has always been in B-flat. It's one more flat than F, so I see no reason why they had to make that alteration. * I would much rather have seen "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" published in its original key of A-flat, though perhaps they did it in G to make it easier. If that's the reason, why didn't they change the key of "The Bitch is Back" to G as well? That would have made even more sense, as Elton has generally transposed that song down to G for live performances, probably to make things easier on the guitarists in his band. * I would have loved to have seen "Tonight" with a full piano transcription of the orchestral arrangement. It appears in the sheet music for Live in Australia, but whole sections of the instrumental bits are missing, which is very frustrating. * I love the music for "Madness". It's wonderfully challenging and thrilling to play. I loved the fact that they put it in here. * "Mama Can't Buy You Love" was *far* from a flop single in North America. It peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the Billboard AC chart. It also reached #10 in Canada. Moreover, it also got Elton a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal. Given that this is the most successful single Elton released in 1979, its inclusion here is more than deserving. Given that it wasn't a hit in the UK, I can see why it's not familiar to you, and to be fair, it's not a single that's stayed in the public consciousness over here either. * It's silly that they put some of the songs out of order. Why bother swapping the order of the songs from The Fox and 21 at 33, for instance? * I agree on "Nobody Wins". While it was the lead single off the album, and therefore I understand why it's there, it's not really a good inclusion from a player's point of view. * "Little Jeannie" is another song that you're coming at from a specifically UK point of view, which is completely understandable. While it tanked in the UK, it was Elton's third-highest-charting single of the 1980s in the US, and one of the highest-charting singles of his career, even outperforming songs like "Your Song", "Rocket Man", "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues", and "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word". However, unlike those classic songs, "Little Jeannie" has largely fallen into obscurity, though undeservedly so. Thanks so much for going through this book. I have a lot of great memories of it, and it was nice to go down memory lane. I would recommend checking out the To Be Continued... sheet music anthology. There are some great inclusions in it, though many are repeats of the one you cover here.

What a brilliant response! Thank you. I wasn't aware of the To Be Continued anthology so will look that up. I'd be interested in playing some of his more obscure songs. In fact, I'd be happy with a songbook without any of the big hits. I appreciate the background you give on the overseas success of some of the tracks. I guess the US and Canadian fans have excellent taste! I must get to know Mama Can't Buy much better. I can't believe I've been a fan for 40 years and missed out on it.

Interestingly i have this book with a few extra tracks and a few more years of Elton added on. Firstly Country Comfort is featured early on which is simple and fun to play. then after Empty garden comes: I guess that's why they call it the blues, I'm still standing, kiss the bride, nikita, sad songs, wrap her up, and finally- Who wears these Shoes? I have to agree that many of these songs aren't suited to the piano particularly well (Kiss the bride!!), but a great curiosity to own and plenty of gems to play.

I didn't know about the later edition. The Breaking Hearts songs would have been welcome, especially the title track.

Mama Can't Buy You Love was included because it peaked at #9 in the United States.
