This is THE song that broke Elton into a star. Everything follows from this success. And yes, as lots of people have said, this is an Elton and Bernie original. If you saw the film Moulin Rouge then this is the song that Ewan McGregor songs to Nicole Kidman. The comment about Elton coming home having his bathwater ready is about right.... Bernie Taupin gave him the completed lyrics and then Elton wrote the music. It's how they did it for 25 years. Stay safe and Keep on Rocking.

While John has won five Emmys, a Golden Globe and several other awards, but this is the first he's shared with Taupin. Elton John was on the show “In the Actors Studio” maybe 10 years ago. The audience is made up of aspiring actors going to The Actor’s Studio in NY City. An acting student in the audience opened a book of plays she had to a random page (and this was random, no set up.) Elton looked at the dialogue for maybe 5 seconds and began playing the piano and singing the words in the book to a melody he wrote on the spot. And the music matched the words perfectly. It was amazing.

Hey, love what you’re doing. FYI, In almost every song performed by Elton John, he wrote the music and Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics. They’ve collaborated for over 40 years. Bernie will write lyrics and present them to Elton who then sits down at the piano and writes music that he thinks expresses the lyrics. I once saw Elton John on stage and a person handed him a book with plays in it. Elton looked over the dialogue in the play and just started making music to go with the dialogue and it was beautiful. Lord Byron once wrote one of favorite lines about music. He wrote: “Music is love in search of a word.” Your Song was a bit hit for Elton John maybe 40-45 years ago.

“I wonder does he get lost in the moment...he just sees who he’s dedicating this song to.” I think he does. I saw him in concert once. Like you can tell just how deep and personal of a connection he has to each and every song. It was an amazing show. As for where you may have seen this - and I know it’s been answered that he is the original artist - like an awards show or whatever, maybe on an X Factor video? Janet Devlin did an amazing rendition of this on that show many years ago, totally worth checking out.

Elton is a great singer ,his songs just invite you in. I needed this today.Helped to relieve some of my stress and anxiety .He just tells the story so clearly, Sometimes the music fades and his voice stands on its own.So talented.

This was Elton's first big hit. Elton always writes the music and Bernie writes the lyrics. The entire Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy (From the End of the World to Your Town) is their biographical album, meant to be listened to from front to back. His early stuff is his best, in my opinion. When I was 11 or 12, his music FLOODED the radio.. the Elton John album, Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player, Tumbleweed Connection, Honky Chateau, Madman Across The Water are all fine albums. You could spend a month down this rabbit hole. Love your reactions!

This song was recorded 50 years ago, this video is from his Top of the Pops British programme in 1971. I actually still remember watching this on TV when I lived in London all those years ago..... Google - why do they call Elton John Mr 10%.

@@colinmaynard2879 ... What do you mean by "before he was gay"?. The Mr 10% was about his record sales in britain, NOT about his sexuality. Elton alone had the biggest record sales (10% of ALL records sold in Britain) for a number of years in the 70s.

This song is very important to me. My parents got divorced when I was 11. I had to live with my crazy drunken Mother. I relished the weekends I spent with my Dad. He loved this song. And I love this song. It represents love and peace, both of which I desperately craved back then. Although it was decades ago, when I hear this song I tear up. Early Elton John.

The movie of John’s life depicts this as Bernie writing the lyrics about a girl he was in love with, but turns out that that was artistic licence and it was literally just a romantic lyric he wrote off the top of his head. Good one though!

Saw this guy at a vineyard. He was paying solo, just him and a piano. My mum got me the tickets for building some retaining walls and gardens to say thankyou. Was one of the best concerts I've been to. Just me and my mum{ I'm 48 she's 74} eating cheese and biscuits, beautiful wine and Elton playing the hits, outdoors. A magic night.

This is one of my favourite reactions of yours--You often have such interesting, thought-provoking questions and observations, and your response is so emotive and genuine. You're like a 'comfortable friend' to your fans :) Keep up the awesome work and don't let the bastards who block posts get you down. Give 'em hell--they're realise the value of what you're providing as the evidence mounts and your message of keeping great music alive increases their exposure. You rock.

Harry Nilsson, who I have been requesting for a few months now, Don McLean, Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Jesse Colin Young, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Carole King, Danny O'Keefe. That should give you a good start. Share the Love of Music.
