Here is food for thought: elves were an umbrella term in Scandinavian mythology and literature for a variety of mystical peoples. Freyr, Norse god of fertility, and a Vanir type god, was considered an elf on account of him ruling over Alfheimr, the realm of the elves. And other attestations told that dwarves were also known as "dark elves" because they lived beneath the earth, wherein no sunlight shined. Of course, dwarves were born from the bone marrow of the primordial jotunn Ymir. So, were elves also bone marrow munchkins?

@@MWhaleK as I said the small impish elves were largely an artifact of the Victorian Era's taming of classical mythologies in this case it was done by conflating the elf with domestic "helper spirits" like the english brownie or the hobgoblin. The tolken-esque "high elf" goes back much further to woodland guardians like the Leshy or Dryad and figures such as the Norse Albrech, the German "eirlking" or the Celtic/Welsh Gwyn Ab Nudd Moreover if you insist on inflating tolken's impact like this you do realize you're disagreeing with HIM as well since Tolken himself spent a lot of time in his personal writings giving credit to his influences such as the Norse Sagas and Beowulf

I feel like there are some differences between countries and especially languages. In German elf/ elves would translate to Elfe. But the concept I'd associate is more that of a fairy (often female, a little mischievous with insect or butterfly wings). Fairy however would translate to Fee, which to me is basically a Fairy Godmother. Tolkiens elves are actually translated as Elb (chosen by Tolkien himself if I remember correctly specifically to avoid the association with little winged creatures) and Christmas elves are Wichtel in German which would retranslate to imp. It confused me when I first learned English and the difference in concepts still fascinates.

What makes them dangerous are the fact that: 1. *They are shapeshifters, being able to turn themselves into literally anything from animals to humans, especially those like your guide, your friends who followed you on a jungle trekking and so on.* 2. *There's a saying that the Orang Bunians have a knack for bringing unlucky travelers to their world. I have that personal "theory" that the elves are refering to the Slavs. Because from a germanic perspective they were living on the river Elbe and beyond, spoke an unknown language etc. Also some places in eastern and northern Germany were founded by Slavs, so they are an "older society, that was there before" and on the other hand were probably "living in the forest" in other centuries when germanic tribes were partly romanised. The “elves” in that story is a bit of a mistranslation. The term for these particular beings are known as “Tomtar” or “Nisser.” They’re house spirits that help or hinder those residing within the home. Elves tend to be a blanket term but generally focus on nature spirits or beings linked with the wilds. The “Christmas Elves” are believed to be Tomtar and not actually the taller elves of Scandinavian/Celtic myths (from where we get the “elf” term). “Dobby” from the Harry Potter books is also representative of this Tomtar mistranslation.

I think the Dark Elves were just Dwarves, because they seem to have very similar appearances and attributes such as turning into stone in sunlight, living underground which explains why they are good craftsmen and having a dark or blue skin similar to the dead. In the Norse mythology Dwarves were not short either, some even had great stature such as Alviss who tried to mary the daughter of Thor.

Being a fan Tolkien, I see a big difference between "elfs" and "elves". Elfs are little pixie like beings that grace cookies boxes. Elves are a race of somewhat angelic like beings as the Silmarillion portrays them. I know that is Tolkien's mythology. But for me, what he created will always be what I perceive when it comes to "elves".

There's is an oral history of the Elves that isn't talked about widely because of all of the other stories muddying up the water. Elves were, and still are very much real people. They never have posed any powers of any kind but had innate abilities that others believed to be supernatural. The Alfar as they were once called, prefered the people to leave them alone to live their lives without interference from the more southern tribes, hence the fantastical tails. In appearance, they were generally regarded as being more attractive than the other tribes of Scandinavia. They are from what is now Norway and Sweden. Yet you will be extremely hard pressed to find one there today. The reason for that is a sad and quiet tragic tale. Most Elves now live in mainland Europe, North America and Australia. If you ever see one, you would never know it.

The way I understand elves as I’ve been studying ancient Norse mythology, is they are akin to the “ascended masters” of the eastern religions. They were human but have ascended and become pure spiritual beings that are immortal and even above “the gods”. They live in Alfheim but have access to the three levels of immortality that lie above the “Nine Worlds” of the world tree. The “dark” elves are also call dwerger, or dwarves. The dwarves are the makers of the universe and in the old stories, make all the magical items for all the Norse gods and goddesses. I loved this video, GREAT JOB! I'd bring up the nitpick that Tolkien's elves, for the most part, were not magical. It is more that they are supernatural, being able to do things far beyond mortals (humans, dwarves and hobbits). When Samwise asked Galadriel if she was going to do magic, when Frodo was drawn to look in her Mirror, Galadriel professed confusion at the word and considered it related to the sort of unnatural things that Sauron did. But things that were mentioned in the storyline is things look Legolas being able to see for miles, simply because Elven eyesight is better, things like their stamina, endurance, strength, etc seem practically mystical due to begin so much better, Legolas being able to walk on top of a slow drift everyone else sinks into because he's "light on his feet". This is why I phrase it as "supernatural", as I recently heard that the difference between that word and "preternatural" can be defined as what is divine;y given and what is not, with "supernatural" the divine side.

It is interesting to add that some phenomenon once attributed to fairies, elves, sprites, brownies, bogles, ect...are seemingly still around but modern people end up attributing the cause to psychic powers, ghosts, or angels/demons. Such as poltergeist activity, "inhuman hauntings", and shadow people. Neither belief can be regarded as an authority on any such subject but rather a cultural interpretation/explanation for the unknown.

I have to ask about the icelandic elves, you made them out to be some form of ecco warrior type? Where in the world did you get that. The highway built around the boulder and the reason some places are not built over certain areas is because those are the homes of the hiddenfolk. Its like if giants that exist and they pull up with a giant bulldozer and start to demolish your house that you own have remolded and your wife and kids live in. They didnt ask or let you know, in fact they cant even see or here you. Are you going to stand by and watch them roll over every thing you own? Or are you going to run over there and shit the key off and pull wires so they cant destroy your home. Give you time to get your family and stuff out to move some where else? Thats all that is going on with the Hiddenfolk. They can get an elf friend that can talk to them and give them time to move or if the refuse work around them. Which is what goes on in Iceland. They are not some little bush kissing fairy that will curse you for crushing a blade of grass. They are supposed to be very Similar to us. Some of them even have there own churches. So if you have some other type of info that says that, please let me know as i have never read any thing like the ecco warrior bend to the hiddenfolks personality? Thanks and i like your work a lot. I just wanted to help clarify that point of information for everyone.

@D N I'm not from iceland and have no personal experience. Yet its lore and its everyone's experience that I have ever heard of there. Even in Briton fairy paths are not blocked with out issues. Again its not about saving a bush but preserving a road between 2 areas the good people use or live in. People cut down trees and move boulders all the time. Its just you don't hear about it unless the fae get involved and it makes a good story.

You present no reasons for the rejection of the indigenous theory. Moreover you actually support this theory yourself by noting the existence of stoneage arrowheads as stimulating belief in fairies. The indigenous theory is still the best theory to explain the ubiquitous nature of fairy myths. The modern culture does not even need to encounter the native one in the flesh as you point out as relics, writings, and architecture are more than enough to get the imagination rolling.

Timing there's no other people except me alone in the cemetery. At first it's like a Lansing bird looks like a small round of hand chicks I saw it first then I looked for the bird in the bush through my vision to follow where it goes but suddenly an elves kind of boy appeared like an statue two hands a bit up like he holds something. But then quickly I leaved him I'm back to my mother's tomb to vade goodbye in a hurry. So my question is are elves man can be seen around the world if you are keen to them !? I'm a mixed race Filipina in the Philippines. But history of ancestors are from UK. And our bloodline mixed with fairies. As what history told from our ancestors bloodlines.

there are elf- and fae-like creatures in every folklore around the world. Most likely umbrella terms for a variety of supernatural beings with varying looks, origins and abilities. As most of them are shapeshifters, can live in the physical world or on other planes of existence, and can choose to be completely invisible, trying to classify them or tell them apart from things like spooks or spirits is futile. There are various terms for fairies, elves, goblins, ghosts, demons etc in chinese, and it's even said they can change category based on abilities. It gets even more confusing when the european terms are being translated into chinese for books, movies and games. Usually, 仙 is translated as fairy, and 灵 as elf. I think those translations are very lacking and the term 妖 would be more descriptive for both. This just highlights how impossible a classification or description of any of these beings is in the end.

You could also make reference to some English town names: Elveden (Suffolk) “elf-haunted valley?” (1086: Eluedena; OE *elfadenu?) but this derivation is still disputed, the alternative being OE elfitu “swan”. Alveden (Lancs.) “elf-haunted valley” (potentially the same derivation as Elveden above), Elf hall (Cumberland, 1631: Elfe-hole “elf’s hole” Elvenfen (Lancs.) “fen associated with elves?”. While derivation from an OE personal-name Ælfa is possible in at least some of these names, OE elf seems to be behind most of them. and of course Ilfracombe (elf wisdom valley)
