The Battle of Elviña, fought on 30 December 1809 near Elviña, Galicia, is also linked to Sir John Moore, a British general who was prominent in the Spanish War of Independence. Although the battle itself did not directly involve Moore, his campaign in Spain and his retreat to La Coruña were contemporaneous with the events in Elviña. Moore, facing the threat of Napoleonic troops, made a strategic retreat to the port of La Coruña, where he finally engaged French forces at the Battle of La Coruña on 16 January 1809. The resistance and sacrifice of Moore and his troops had a major impact on the overall resistance against Napoleonic forces in the Iberian Peninsula.
